Ouch, I'm really glad I managed to order my 9 cell for $200 just days before this happened rather than waiting.

Wow that is freakin steep! Given the margin on these, I wonder if you can talk a sales rep to help you out on the price...

Yeah, prices are getting higher and batteries are in short supply. It took Dell a week to get me an exchange battery for my m1530.

Holy cow! $200 for 6 cell and $300 for a 9 cell. I am glad that I ordered my Vostro with one of each (for additional $59 only). I paid only $700 for the whole thing with several upgrades already.

There was a good point made by the article. The RAM prices are drastically lower. Just check the Dell website yourself. It used to be 400+ for a 4 GB upgrade, now its like $150. It might possibly be worthwhile to buy RAM through Dell now.

On 3/25, it cost $75 to upgrade to a 9 volt battery on an XPS m1530. The next day, on 3/26, the same battery zoomed to $199 on the Dell website. That's a 266% increase in 24 hours. Imagine if you woke up one morning and the $3/gallon gas was now $8/gallon!

Its funny how the Dell spokespeople keep saying that this incident should affect prices of notebooks themselves (when in reality they are...)

I saw this on Engadget, this sucks for new buyers. The plant isn't going to resume production for 2-3 months.

Either way, I just hope the price hike wont last for long, I considered buying a second battery as a backup, but definitely not now. :(

Basically, they won't have enough battery for their new laptop in the upcoming months. So they are making the profit of each laptop from each battery sold.

You know... these OEM manufacturers think consumers are idiots.

I wonder if 3rd party batteries will jump up $100+ each. NOT!

OEM manufacturers give consumers all the reasons not to by a 3rd party battery and at the same time give us reasons NOT by by their own!

Batteries does not cost that much. But during their shortage, each battery they sold would lead to one less laptop sold. So they are trying to cover the profit lost from laptop sales if you insist to get a second battery.

They also increased the price of the 200GB 7200RPM Hard Drive (which was once standard) to $100 add-on. Now the standard is a 320GB 5400RPM HDD.

Yes i noticed this, i priced up a M1530 last night with a 9 cell which cost £70 extra, i go on it today at college to show a friend my build and it now costs near £120 so its like twice the price now! Which is one reason to put off buying a notebook for a month or two until the prices calm down again.

I heard it was something to do with a shortage too, but due to a Battery factory blowing up or something down those lines

It's all because of massive fire at the LG Chem factory in South Korea on March 3rd.

LG is the second largest manufacturer of laptop batteries in the world and supplies laptop batteries for many of a world's largest manufacturers of notebooks.

This means that most laptop makers won't have a sufficient supply of batteries for some time. Officials from LG Chem indicated that their battery assembly lines won't resume production for another two or three months.

HP, Dell and Asus are among those OEMs hit hardest by the drop in production. Asus claims the battery shortage could impact up to 40 percent of their new laptop shipments ... including the much anticipated Eee PC update. Dell has reorganized the deployment of their existing stock of laptop batteries in order to make sure new built-to-order laptops have enough batteries. This means that secondary and replacement batteries from Dell are in limited supply.

As of this morning, most laptop manufacturers such as Lenovo and HP have kept laptop battery prices the same despite the decreased supply. Unfortunately, many people in our discussion forums have noticed that Dell has now increased the price of all their laptop batteries by 50 to 100 percent.

Dell is now charging $200 for a standard 6-cell laptop battery and $300 for a 9-cell extended life battery. This is a $100 increase over Dell's prices for the same batteries just a week ago.

That's why they are so expensive.
    Hope i helped.

The battery factory burned down and batteries are reported to be in short supply for about 6 months until the facility has been restored. If you can hold out, do so.

Do you think they increased the HDD price because of the batteries? Because there is no cost published for the battery that COMES WITH the laptop, so they increased it in other areas?
