I went to pick up my AC adapter for my 1400 and it was was too hot to touch, almost the point of being able to cause a burn. The carpet it was sitting on was just as hot too.

Is it normal for the adapter to get this hot? Causing a fire is one thing, but I'm also worried about it blowing and taking the motherboard with it.

That doesn't sound right. I've never had a notebook adapter get that hot.
Contact Dell about it as soon as possible.

It's actually about right, it will get very hot, though to a point where it may seriously burn might be needing a look.

If you can touch it and not immediately pull back, then it's not hot enough to burn you =] That would be the Dell tech support answer lol.

It would not be the first time a power adapter overheated and was a fire hazard. Several manufacturers have recalled in the past, and Dell is no exception.

    I would call Dell.
