Still using a Dell 9400 here. The 7900GS failed before, and I did the oven bake which fixed it for a year. Its failed again, so I'm about to bake it one more time. Is it worth putting a copper shim on it. If so what one do I get?

Well copper shims when done right, do help with heat dissipation not sure how much more it will help your 7900GS as compared to good thermal pads and AS5 paste.
The 7900 card just runs too hot period, a good cooling pad and regular cleaning of the heat pipe assembly is your best bet.
IF you find the card stays dead, you can also try the ATI 1400 card - there is a variant of the 1400 that was compatible in the 1705 laptop, and they work well enough.
Good luck. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
There is no point in shimming the 7900GS? The heatsink already makes direct contact with the GPU die...

Just bake it and skip using as5 as it is dated, good as a glue but there is better now days on the market. Best compound on the market except for the liquid metal alloy. I got two Inspiron 9300s and it does help to mod them cooling wise.
