My Dell 9300 is on the way and I am planning to do a total reformat/reinstall of Windows to get rid of all the inevitable Dell crap loaded on the laptop. Will the Windows disk that comes with the Dell be able to do this or will it load it just like it was shipped?
Thanks.

mine didnt come with OS cd's but I called them and told them I wanted them incase I switched out HD later and they had no prblems sending them to me.
not sure if it had anything to do with me saying that I wanted to be able to still have all the stuff Dell preloads. which I dont I just wanted the disc.
but this worked so you might have to call
when you get also burn the OS form under start-->programs-->Dell acc.
the disc you make from there will not have all of dells bloatware on there.
hope this helped -

The Dell utility is easy to find. If I remember correctly, it says Dell Recovery CD or something like that.
You won't get a driver cd either, so don't forget to burn your dell drivers also to a cd (C-drive under Dell folder). If you don't this, then you'll have to download them from the net, and it takes a few hours.

Thanks for the info, everyone! [ ]

I ordered my i9300 a few hours ago and just chatted with two Dell csr's. The first said I had to PAY for those discs. The second said that I had to wait until my order arrived, then request the OS and driver discs.
Anybody else get this response? Seems pretty stupid to make somebody wait 3 week for delivery and then another 3-4 days to install anything.

Currently searching for a new notebook. -
I was just discussing the pay thing on another topic. I had a charge of 23 something on my account as an invoice, but i never had to pay it. You would think considering that you paid for the laptop, that you wouldn't have to pay for the OS and driver CD's, but I guess Dell doesn't see it that way[?]

I have my 9300 for one day now.
I plan to format the hard drive and install Windows XP Pro.
I have burned the DELL, DRIVER and I386 folders and create the restore cd.
Do I have all to begin my formatting ? Or does it miss me something ?
With my system, I have 2 cd (AOL and Word Perfect) but it have many applications installed on the notebook (Power DVD, Sonic MyDVD LE (or Record Now), Dell QuickSet, Dell Picture Studio). Can I have a CD copy of the install files for these softwares or I will lost them all when I will format ?
Thank you -
I'm still waiting for my computer to arrive, but on the order detail, it says:
Operating System Backup & Recovery Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition backup CD XPHMED [310-6841]
Is this the OS or recovery disk? -
OK, i am getting my i9300 in a week or two, and i just want to know, how do i copy the dell drivers onto a cd?
Also, if i have a copy of xp pro, can i just not worry about the drivers and install that or what? -
You'll still need to download the drivers even if you use your own copy of XP. You can download them from Dell's website at http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
Once you get the 9300, you can burn a copy of the Dell folder from c: drive. The problem is that the drivers might be outdated, so you might still want to go to the website and get the current releases.

OK, so i just look for them in the c: drive folder and copy them all over to a cd, then make myself that one cd that restores it to normal and i'm done? ok

yep, those are the two things that you will need. As soon as you open the c: drive, you should see a dell folder. The only other thing that you might want to get is the burning (Sonic) and dvd decoder (Cyberllink) software.
Once you do the clean install, then you can copy the drivers folder back to the c: drive. I don't remember if mine autodetected the new drivers or not, or if I had to tell each device to update hardware. You can verify that your drivers are installed properly by checking the device manager.
