I'm looking at getting a new notebook and was thinking about getting one of the new 9200's with a 2.0 Ghz processor and 512 MB ram (1 dimm so I can upgrade it later) with the xga screen (I'm never going to be able to read anything on the higher res screen), 7200 RPM HD and a second battery (since I would like to get an upgrade on the primary but a bigger secondary is only $30 more). The battery life and widescreen combo is fairly appealing.

Anyway - Is this a good idea - are there any decent equivalents on the market (mainly looking at the potential for me to move it around the house without a power adaptor - i.e good battery life) preferably with 17" widescreen.

    Have
Dell Inspiron 2500, 800 Mhz P3, 312 MB Ram, 6.5 MB Onboard Graphics

    Getting
Dell 9200, 2.0 GHz, 1024 MB Ram, 128 MB Ati Mobility Radeon 9700 Graphics

The Toshiba Satellite P35 and HP zd7000 are the main PC notebook equivalents to the Inspiron 9200. In January HP will be releasing the zd8000 upgrade to its zd7000. Fujitsu will also be releasing a very attractive 17" notebook option called the N6000, we posted an article about this last week:

Also, since the 9200 is new I'd recommend waiting to see if there are any issues with it...sometimes Dell will release a notebook and then on the first few out realize there's a problem (this happened with the Inspiron 700m). I agree though, the 9200 does look like an attractive option but it does have competition. Since you're in the UK release dates on notebooks may differ too so you might not feel like waiting for the new Fujitsu or HP.

I think I may wait... Have a look at the prices of the Mobile 6800's - actually I was going to get a friend to get the 9200 for me - currently he's in the US til xmas and its substantially cheaper (no Vat - 17.5% tax on luxury items) and the exchange rate is VERY favourable...

I also like the Dell 9200, only problem is it may not come with a metal screen shell, like the configration very much and decide to get one if now other equivalent options, 9700 graphic card matchs the PM 2.0 is perfect, 9800 128m actually waste part of ability, maybe is for 915pm better.
Only problem is only a few chance to the USA, have to wait after 3 or 4 months

    Have IBM x31 PM1.6 512M, 60G 7200rpm,16M ATI Mobileradon, DVD dock and 802.11 a/b/g wireless

    For Dell 9200 PM 2.0 512M 60G 7200rpm 128M Gerforce 7000, WUXG, my home multi-media center and office tool.
