Why do I see very little about the Dell 8600? I've been getting their flyers and watching the prices go down, but can't find any review here on NBRev. I've been vacillating between the 8600 and an IBM T42. A little worried about the IBM selloff, but then isn't everything made in China by low wage workers these days?

Been thinking about the 8600 with 1GB DDRam, 15.4 screen 1.5 or 1.6 gHz Centrino 7XX Dothan. Dell offers three grades of TFT screens. Anyone know what would be best for this old guy to watch DVDs on. I don't play games so I don't need fast graphics. Do I know what I am talking about? Only a little.

    Ideas?

    Jer

    Dude, I gotta get a Dell - 8600. Orrr, should I get and IBM - T42?

You are a few weeks behind my friend. The i8600 has been discontinued my friend. The T42 is still available but has been replaced by the T43. The 8600 can only be obtained through Dell Outlet store.

The Inspiron 6000d replaces the 8600. However if you are a gamer you may not like the video card option (x300). Also the 8600 had a port replicator option which the 6000d does not. Other than that the i6000 is based on the newest centrino platform including the 915 chipset.

    Inspiron 6000d
    PM 760(2.0GHz)
    15.4" WSXGA+
1 GB RAM (pc2-4200 533mhz from crucial, it works)
    64MB ATI X300
    60GB 7,200 RPM
    CDRW/DVD
    Bluetooth
    2200
    XP pro

Looked at Dell Outlet site for 8600s. i note that these used notebooks come with program on the HD. Two I looked at came with AOL. Never would I want AOL on my computer. i understand that one has a miserable job getting it off if you want to use Netscape ISP, for example. I read this on FreedomList.com forum. Pretty scary stuff. Don't think I will be getting a used NB.

Well, back to the drawing board. Thought I had it knocked.

Doesn't that just get you! i wait for the price to reach my level and the $##@#$ thing is discontinued. I'll look in the Dell site.

That 6000 sounds great, but will I be able to get it for under $1500?

How is that WSXGA+ screen? What kind of video card goes with it. I am worried about mismatching the componants when I order it.

    Thanks for great feedback, guys.

Thanks! Just looked at Dell site. They have an 8600 with 1.4, 15.4,60gig. I was hoping for a 1.6. The 1.4 probably flies compared to my Dimension 2350. btw, I have never had any trouble with my desktop machine. i have heard horror stories, but i have been delighted. Now that I have Firefox, I don't even get popups.

Looked at your T43, abax. Looked great til I looked at the price with some of the junk I put on it. Wow! over $3000!!

    Ran a trial purchase of the 6000... 730 (1.6/2MB/533FSB), 15.4 WSXGA+, 1GB DDR2, 40GB, 24X CD-RW, 128 Radeon X300. $1597. Hm.

Y'think that will discontinue before I love the price? I think I will read the reviews of those guys who are getting the 3/18 shipments. Talk about kids in the candy store! I hope they are thrilled with the workmanship and toughness of the 6000. I will be looking for their crowing. I hope they yell loud and long about how good the 600 is. Then I might be ready to throw a paycheck at it. Ooooh, that scares me.
