    hi
i recently received a new dell xps m170 and i had a question. i was gonna do the wipe reinstall but i'm a little leary on it so for now i was wondering what are the best drivers for the card? 7800 gtx? i have the stock ones now but should i use nvidias? should i try to get some from 3d tweakers? i'm not sure. seems though that the drivers i have now are causing the terrain effects in command and conquer generals zero hour to turn green? it's the First Decade software. Well if anyone has heard of anything or would know where i could find information i would appreciate it.

    Thank You Kindly

    Preston

i found a good site if anyone is looking for some good drivers... laptopvideo2go.com has all kinds of modded nvidia drivers and they say the .98 series works great with dell xps m170 (shame on dell for not updating their drivers)

If you arent happy with sthe laptopvideo2go drivers, you may try the mobileforce drivers at tweaksrus.com. I use them, and they are great.

    Hey Bal'thzar,
I applied the latest drivers (83.90 i think) from Tony on my new XPS with a 7800, and my 3d '05 score went from 6600 (out of the box) down to 5600. I also tried to over clock per the Nvidia panel and the settings wouldn't hold. Any Idea why?

Btw I installed the drivers per the instructions posted on the forum. uninstalled, rebooted in safe mode, scubbed the original drivers, rebooted and installed the new drivers.

Well, I'm not exactly sure why those drivers LOWERED your score!! I have laptopvideo2go drivers, and they bumped me to above 6700, I don't remember the exact number. Maybe just give them a try??

As far as the overclock not working, that's because you CAN'T overclock the m170!! The BIOS doesn't allow it :( So if you wanna OC, you have to flash the BIOS. It's still worth it though, for the little OC I have, last I checked I was somewhere above 7450 in 3dmark05. And I'm not running any hotter than I was before

Hey sublime thanks for the info. I tried to reinstall the drivers again and I actually got a boost from 6600 to 6799. So I'm very happy with that. As far as overclocking, I guess i'll have to do a little more research. Thanks again!

did you use driver cleaner PE before you upgraded to get out your older drivers. Also if you check out tweaksRus's forums you will see that some do have issues, that being said thier drivers are optimized for gaming and though it should lower your score check your FPS in some of your games. 3dmarks to me are not the best indicator I prefer to see the results in my gaming.

But if you didn't clear out the old drivers first that could be the issue

Leeer, what steps did you take to load the 83.90 driver? You said you had problems and reloaded to solve them. I have a M170 and I'm about to do the same thing.

Yea, I did use the drive cleaner. Something just wen screwy with that driver swap. After I got the lower score, I just reinstalled the dell drivers and my score went back to normal. A few days later I decided to try it again, and it worked out good!

I think that you should go ahead and do it. I dont think that you'll run into any problems, just make sure that you do follow the directions. It might not net you a whole lot more points in 3dMark, but like Bal'thzar stated, you should see a difference in actual gaming. Good luck, here's a link to the directions:

I followed all the directions, but when I get to installing the 83.90 driver, I get this error message:
"The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

What am I doing wrong here?

The first time I tried to install the drivers, I got an error like that I think. I restarted the compertur normally and installed the driver again and it worked, but that is when I got the 1000 less points on 3d mark.

How are you uninstalling the original driver?

I'm following the directions you linked above: I installed Driver Cleaner Pro, uninstalled the NVidia driver, rebooted into safe mode, ran Driver Cleaner, rebooted, and ran the install on the 83.90. (I had the wireless, anti-virus, and my firewall disabled the whole time)

Ok, fixed the problem. I downloaded the XTreme-G MobileForce 83.90.v2.25 driver and tried it. Everything works great and I'm running 3DMark06 as we speak (I have two comps).

    I went from a 3419 3DMark06 score to a 3452 after tweeking the machine ( see post).

The XTreme-G driver specifically brought me from a 3452 to a 3526. I'm very happy with those 3DMark06 scores and the driver gave me a great boost!

Thanks again for the instructions your provided, Leeer.
