Is the 630m and 710m the same machine? Or is this 710m going to be released Nov 1? (The 630m is already in North American markets). The "710m" replacing "700m"?

The 710m is going to replace the 700m, is a 12.1-inch notebook. The 630m is a 14.1-inch and is the same as the XPS M140. You can check the XPS M140 at the DELL HOME@HOME OFFICE and the 630m at the SMALL BUSINESS.

Any chance of a dedicated GPU? Let's imagine that the price tag is not a factor, what would you pick between the new 710m and the Sony s-580?

With regards to picking between the that Sony 13.3" (not sure if it's the one YOU are mensioning) and the 700m, [price not a factor], I believe I would still go with 700m/710m. The Sony is sleek and the competition is very close, but from what I see, components are nearly identical (unless there is something about the chipset which I don't know about). Maybe it was just my viewing angle, but in person, the 13.3" Sony, seemed to give off A LOT more light on the bottom of the LCD. Not sure if THIS quantifies as 'light leakage' but it just seems that a bulb on the bottom inch of the LCD was emitting more light so to say. IT COULD have just been my viewing angle (a bit sharp from side) or maybe the notebook LCD is supposed to be like that but in comparison to the viewing angles and sharpness of 700m, the 700m is bar none the best ~ 11 - 13" clarity i've seen.

MAYBE this new "710m" won't posess the chance of having that mic-in problem that we have heard so much about. (And some claim that it can be fixed via a driver - not sure myself). Perhaps they changed the motherboard to something newer, threw in a 5400rpm HDD (or atleast the option for it - I know the 700m doesn't have the option YET, some people claim to have recieved there's with a 5400rpm one. Upon ordering online, could one actually call Dell and request they put one in there w/o a charge? Or so I have heard - and I want to tell them to downgrade the 80GB HDD to 60GB and throw in a router instead ;p)

Thanks for your reply! Yes I'm referring to a 13.3'' WXGA BR screen notebook; as far as I know the main difference is that Sony s-580 comes with a dedicated graphic card (NVIDIA GeForce Go 6400) and you can customize the notebook with an up to 120GB hard disk. Sharing any other thoughts about these two notebooks would be appreciated! I’m deciding between these two lappies and Sony S-580 is my front runner so far.

Your deciding between the Sony and Dell right? Well, now that I hear it has dedicated graphics, that is boost for the Sony most definately. Personally, I don't plan on playing any graphic intensive games or image rendering on my laptop, so the integrated 700m graphics will be sufficient. However, do you plan to play any games or do any graphic manipulation on the notebook? If so, the 700m must be eliminated from your options.

How many dedicated MB does the NVIDIA GeForce Go 6400 support? Is that 64 Dedicated or 128MB dedicated?

If these two were similarily priced (which they are not because the Sony 13.3" is about $1000 more here in Canada - and that would work out to about $1500+ there in the US with the available Dell coupons) then I would go with the Sony, just because of the dedicated graphics, and if you need the larger HDD than upgrading that will be benificial to you (max. 80GB on 700m - enough for me, maybe not enough for your needs though).

Sony VGN S-580 comes with Intel 915GM Chipset Integrated Gfx but it's customizable with NVIDIA GeForce Go 6400 with TurboCache that means video memory should be 64MB+64MB shared (not 100% sure so don't quote me). You need at least 512MB DDR2-SDRAM.

Yeah! I heard about that too and I'm very hopeful for the future! Recently I've been disappointed by XPS M140's design, dimension/weight and in someway performance too.

Hmmm ya, will be interesting to see the new design. So all Asus will be doing is designing the chasis for the machine? When it was mensioned Asus will be manufacturing for Dell I wasn't sure to what extent, but all Dell does is buy wholesale parts from various parts' manufacturers, put them in a shell and call it a Dell.
