Yeah, Was looking at the 700m for a while but now its no longer for sale on dell.ca and theres a dell 710m. Ive looked at the specs, and i cant see one difference, Anyone know what changed?
-
-
It's just a more up to date processor, with 533mhz FSB instead of 400mhz FSB.
edit: This is wrong, look down to see answer -
ohhh i see, thanks.
-
-
so... then whats the difference, did dell just randomly change it to 710m?
-
Ack. If it is, my fault, I'm not a pro with Dell heh.
edit: Ok, so I was wrong hah. It's just a cosmetic update, nothing changes besides that. -
Ive just read something that said the color is different, but i look at pics on dell.ca and it looks identicle... what color is it suposed to be now?
-
The keyboard I think.
Do a quick search for 'dell 710m' and it says.. -
The cosmetic differences between the 700m and 710m are as follows:
There is no more white trim on the 710m, instead a whole arctic silver chasis and the keyboard is white, no longer black. -
ohh well worth the upgrade

The only changes I see so far are cosmetic. Perhaps Dell just wanted to update the model number to make it seem new, and thus customers will say "Hey, look, a new model!" and buy it, because as we all know, the 700m has been stretching it's legs for a while. -
The Dell 700M is really outdated and has been out since July 2004 and they finally update it over a year later by only changing the keyboard color? Way to go Dell!
-
Could have been more of an upgrade though, like Sonoma technology, Chipset. But the redefined color scheme is about it.
-
Wow, okay, thats it, the people at Dell are complete and total lazy morons with no brains at all. They finally update the severely outdated 700M over a year after it was released with just a fresh coat of paint!?!?
Psshsh, %#(@ you Dell. -
Hahaha, yup, not much effort for this machine.
-
My 700m is currently on Ebay so I can get the 710m! jks...
I'm pretty surprised about this update. I guess it makes me feel better that there isn't a "newer and better" version of the 710 m -
yup, long live 700m
-
I personally love the 700M, even though I don't own one. But it is outdated and in need for an update. The model came out July 2004 and it needs at least some updates like built in Bluetooth and Intel GMA 900 graphics instead of the Intel Extreme 2 graphics and using Sonoma instead of Dothan.
-
True, that update would have been appropiate.
thecollegekid, how is the 1.7GHz working out on that machine? Have you tried/seen a 2.0GHz one and noticed any difference? -
I'm sure after you use 710m for a year, the dirty keyboard will dark enough to make it like a 700m
-
Do those white keyboards, I assume, tend to get more dirty than the grey ones, for example? Very worn and dirty and if used daily, needing replacement after a year? Or some sort of cleanser one can buy to clean them off? (I assume they would have to be taken out of the laptop first)

Hello Folks, Been lurking for a while and now decided to join.
Anyways, the i710m is basically the same except that you can order it with a 7200 RPM HDD where as the 700M you could not.
On the Dell.com site you still will not see the 710 but if you recieved a catalog dated for Nov23-Nov26 and you enter the e-value code it will bring up the 710m and configurable. -
I didn't know there was a 7200rpm HDD option for the i710m.
-
there isn't a 7200 hdd option on their website nor is it listed on the HDD link as having a 7200 drive.
The only thing i can think of is that it is a special deal, and you'll have to contact dell to see if you can substitute the 7200rpm drive for the 5400rpm. -

This is not my order but something I quickly put together for show.
Use the evalue code listed to see -
Interesting, it must be a promo at this time. I know a 7200rpm HDD will eat up more battery, but will it tend to get warmer and/or louder than conventional 5400rpm ones?
-
ugh, why can't dell make it simple. They should put the 7200rpm on their site. Is everyone using the e-value code to get the upgrade to 7200rpm HDD ?
-
I see the option for 7200rpm HDD at various capacities is there. Interesting.
-
I'm still deciding whether to go with a 2.0GHz processor or a 1.7GHz one. I know the 1.7GHz will be ample power for my tasks, but the promo is currently a 2.0GHz one.
And I don't want to get the 2.0GHz if it is going to run warmer (causing fan to activate more often) and eat the battery faster. -
As long as your using the 8 cell battery you should be ok. Personally the longest time I am away from any powersource would be about 3-4 hours and that is usually on a plane and with the 8 cell battery I should be good even with the 7200rpm HDD.
I am planning on ordering one with the 1.7
When I was at the Kiosk I got to play with it for about 30 minutes and the speed was very fast. Lots of Ram is a must!
Loading up windows Media or the IE I noticed took a bit more time than my desktop but I dont use 5400rpm either.
All in all I truly enjoy the size, look, feel, and power of these machines.
Most of my work is data input for ordering, Word, Excel, Frontpage, Photoshop, Mail, and Web browsing with occassional DVD movie watching.
So this machine with the beautiful screen will do me fine. -
Nice. Ya i've seen 'em up-close at a Kiosk and a relative owns one as well.
Nice little machines they are. I'm not so worried about the battery consumption of a 2.0GHz machine as much as the heat generated by it. I will probably be using the machine on a desk but occationally, i'd like to sit it on my lap ect. -
I'm going to get mine with a 5400rpm HDD hopefully (no option on the Dell Canada website for a 7200rpm HDD).
That and either the 1.7 or 2.0GHz processor, but perhaps later this week there will be a 1.8GHz promo which will be a nice median. -
I wish Dell would start carrying Toshibas new perpendicular hard drives, which in turn use 1 platter instead of a 2 platter thats common today. such as a 40 GB notebook hdd would be 2 platter, meanwhile the new toshiba is 1 platter, thus using less battery. I think then making it a 7200 RPM would even out the power comsumption aspect of it?
-
Hmm interesting. I don't know much about HDD details other than the various manufacturers and speeds available. But it would be nice to see a 7200rpm HDD consuming power equivalent to that of a 4200rpm one.

Should I return mine? I have 5 days to do so? I have the 70om
-
Why do you want to return it???
-
The only difference between the two are cosmetic. They have the same internals. I would save yourself the trouble and the increased risk of getting bad components. If it works now, don't mess with it.
-
Maybe for intel T2300/2400 .....
-
so I've got a 700m and have been happy with it, but now my wife wants a laptop so we're thinking of getting one. In this price range (700m price range) what other options do you guys know of out there? Especially any tablet ones if there are any...
thanks. -
