Have a DVD drive issue with the 700m.

When I first got the computer about 4 months ago everything seemed fine. I have two other computers and never did much with the NEC ND-6500A DVD drive.

My first problem was with norton ghost, using a boot disk, at first, never an issue, booted from cd & dvd boots disks and would work, then it would not read any disk, and did nothing. But 1 out of 10 times it would read.

Now 80% of the time I put in a dvd it will not read in windows. But put in a normal cd-r, it will read 9 out of 10 cd-r, but then (on occasion) those dvd's and cd's that did not work when placed back in will read no problem.

Ran the Dell diagnostic and same thing, usually no problem reading from cd's, most dvd's did work, but then some did not on dvd and cd.

It's like pot luck what will and will not read, but most times cd's will work and read.

It is not software, because I stick my external Sony DVD burner into the USB slot and 100% on all types of cd's and dvd's will work with my installed software.

It is a modular bay DVD drive (I think that is what they call it) as I can just flip a latch and slide it out.

Has anyone ever had or heard of an issue like this, think it is stuffed DVD drive, software, driver (I have updated to the latest driver using all the dell updates for this system), other than that everything work fine. Does not crash, hang.

One last thing, it appears to read the cd, but simply shows an empty content disc, even in properties.

To me, it sounds like flauty dvd drive or possibly driver problem. If this was happening when you were using the older drivers, then it seems like it would be a dvd issue.

If you are still in warranty, you might give dell a call and see what they say. It couldn't hurt anything.

Yep I think the drive is probably stuffed, I ghosted back to my original install and still the same issue, it was happening with the original driver from what i can recall.

It's a good thing I happen to get with the system the 3 yr complete warranty and protection.
