I have three questions about the Dell 6400.
1) Is the top lid of the screen removable? I don't want to remove the whole screen, just the top half(the plastic covering) from the screen itself.
2) Is replacing the motherboard for this model a difficult task and can anyone give me a guide/walkthrough on how to do it?
3) I am pretty sure the processor chip is soldered down to the motherboard or else it would be too thick and bulky. I just want to get confirmation on that one.
Can anyone help me?

The service manual for the 6400 should answer most of your questions.

To seperate the LCD cover you have the seperate the "display assembly(screen+LCD cover) and then remove the bezel and screen
replacing the mobo(system board) is very difficult and not for beginners. Even though the service guide shows you how to do it, it will still be difficult and should not be tried by inexperieinced users(you can mess up in so many ways).
The processer is socketed so its removable(first remove the heatsink)
GL if you decide to do it. -
I didn't realize that the processor was socketed. Thought that it would be a little too thick if they did it like that.
I have a relative that owns a Dell 6400 too and he's planning to buy another laptop. Being that his processor runs a 2.0GHz and mines only a 1.60GHz, I wanted to make the trade. I won't be making the motherboard switch if I could simply remove the processor and swap them. Thanks!
