I am about to order a well-configured 6000.
A couple of questions regarding the hard drive options:
1. Is the 60gb @ 7200 a major improvement over the 80gb? If so, why?
2. Does the 60gb cause "extra" heat and is it noisey?
Thanks.

Hi Sand Dollar,
The 80gig is at 5400rpm, so it's much slower than the 60gig. There have been some complaints about the 60gig clicking. There have been some suggestions to upgrade your memory to 1gig to solve the problem. I can't really comment on the heat since I have a different system.
Hope this helps,
~SG~

So you have two choices the 80gb 5400 and 60gb 7200 rpm drives.
The 60gb can be big improvement over the 5400 rpm 80gb drive because of load times. The 60gb naturally will load faster and all that junk, but I dont think that honestly it will load a lot faster. On games my guess is a second faster, but as long as you are at the 5400 rpm mark you are fine for gaming.
2 the 60gb drive will automatically produce more heat. As with desktop drives and such the faster the drives rpm the more heat it will put out.
Personally I am the type of person who is not all too concerned about the super fast loading as space on my laptop. I dont think its worth the extra money
I barely glanced at this for time purposes, but take a look.

I think that Hard drive heat is the least of your laptop heat problems. Heat even from a 7200 RPM drive will be taken over by the heat created by the CPU and graphics processor.

Upgrade the RAM to at least 1gig and go for the 80 HD. There is barely a noticeable difference in the speed as long as you get a 5400 not a 4200RPM ,then a big difference. Gamers seem to swear by the so called huge difference. There isn't and you would need them side by side just to see the insignifigant difference. Not for the money. You can now buy a 100 external HD 7200 RPM's for about $175. Shop around, save the money from Dell ,buy the 80 HD and buy the external if you want it. I think It's pretty cool for the price. [8D]

I agree... get more memory if possible, and "settle" for a 5400RPM disk. You'll be much happier with the response of your system.

If you add the 100 HD 7200 on the Dell Website , it's $150 before discount . Alone or with your order. I paid $135 for mine and It's pretty decent.
