I will be purchasing a Dell 6000 today. Should I stick with the Pentium 4M 730 at 1.6 GHz or should i spend another 200 bucks and upgrade to the 750 at 1.86 GHz???? They both have 90nm technology and both have a 533MHz FSB and 2MB of L2 cache.

    Any suggestions??

well, I would stick with the 730 IMO.

I upgraded from the 715 to the 730 because of the increase in technology, but going from the 730 to the 750, there isnt that much of a difference other than clock speed.

How much of a difference is that 200mhz clock speed? Negligable..., not worth 200 bucks.

You are better off saving that 200 dollars and spending it on 533 mhz ram.

For further opinion, the 1.6 and the 1.8 will probably be obsolete around the same time, so its not like spending 200 bucks is going to get you anywhere in the future.

I think you made the right choice upgrading the processor to the 1.86GHz. I personally opted for the 2.0GHz processor. My logic was I can spend money later for more RAM or a larger hard drive and it would be easy to upgrade, but upgrading the processor would be a whole other issue - too much cost and to much risk (since I have a 3 year warranty). Also, as far as the whole 200MHz issue goes...200MHz in a Pentium-M is a lot more then 200MHz in a P-4, I think you'll be happy with the machine. Congrats.

    2.0GHz Pentium-M - 15.4" WSXGA+ screen
    1GB RAM (2x512MB 533MHz Micron chips in dual-channel)
    60GB 7200rpm HD - 128MB ATI X300 - 8x DVD+/-RW

yeah, as long as you were able to get that $750 buck off coupon its all good..

WOnka might be right, the 200 mhz difference on a pentium M might be more of a difference then say 200 mhz on a athlon 64 desktop processor, but I haven't seen any benchmarks to make a realistic answer

My 6000 will be here tomorrow, but I am not counting on it. It should be here on Monday.

I got my 6000 the day earlier with the 1000 redemptions. I end up getting the 1.60 GHZ, 512MB(2 banks), 80 gig HD with WSXGA+ and just get the CDRW/DVD. I got the 9 cell battery and will sell it. All for $820.

I might need to get the PC2-4200 memory. The PC2-3200 does not take advantage of 533MHZ FSB. Yah, need to get in pairs for DUAL channel. Thats all I have learned so far.
