Does anyone know of any plans for Dell to release an 18 inch laptop PC like many others have done so already such as Sony, HP, Toshiba, etc. If so, when will they be released.

    Thanks :) .

I haven't heard of anything planned for that large of a notebook. There was the XPS 2010 a while back, but it wasn't a big seller.

Thanks for your very quick reply atbnet :) . I find it strange why Dell haven’t released an 18 inch laptop considering many of Dell’s competitors have already done so.

I could understand why the 20 inch Dell laptop was not a big seller as not many would want that large a notebook. I certainly would not consider one that big, but an 18/18.4 inch one I would go for.

They already have a few large 17 inch notebooks, however as they move away from 16:10 AR I would not be surprised to see an 18 inch in the 16:9 AR.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a notebook? Buy a 15.4 and hook it up to a 24" screen on the desk.

The way I see it, all the industry is doing is to try to make Netbooks become the new "Notebook", which is kinda wrong.

I can see the move from 15.4 inch to 16 inch as it makes the 1920 WUXGA resolution look to have less of a microscopic text feel and looks perfect. Though 17 to 18 inch is definitely not necessary at all. Hopefully Dell understands that there really isn't any real major advantage to moving to 18 inch. Standards to change, though upping 17 to 18 just doesn't make as much sense as upping 15.4 to 16.

i would love to see an 18" notebook from dell because a notebook of that magnitude will have to have a pretty good dedicated GPU.

I think ppl buying this kind of laptops to have big keyboard and screen like desktop pc. So why they don't buy desktop you ask? I'm this situation I have from time to time move with my working place to different room. I now wearing laptop all the time but 2-3 times per month. It's problematic to move desktop pc. Right now I have 17'' but when I find something what fit my requirements I will buy 20''

You're absolutely right. It's more of a portable desk top than a carry anywhere laptop. As for choosing 18" rather than 17"?

That's because this screen size fits perfectly with HD widescreen. This also makes it easier for manufacturers who can now make one size screen instead of two.

18" - I don't call that portable anymore. They ought to make it more like a battery powered portable desktop. You should be able to separate the screen from the keyboard / touchpad.

Otherwise . . . no thanks. Too bulky to drag around.

I am seeing more and more kids using netbooks as a primary pc though. I asked a kid the other day what he thought about it, and he seems to think that it is plenty livable. ugh! They are still too gimmiky to me . . . I'd rather spend 350 on an iphone or blackberry than mess around with an underpowered wifi 'net device'.

Despite their being a step backwards in the eyes of any serious computer geek, there's a tremendous market for them. Even if it's a trendy one?

The spectrum of mobile computers (purposely vague) is widening. I consider anything over 15.4" to be desktop replacement - to be used almost exclusively on a desk in one place. Then, you have mainstream, subnotebooks, ultraportables, netbooks. I, like other people I know, would never consider a netbook because their smartphone (iPhone in my case) does almost everything a netbook can. Soon, you'll have MIDs and UMPCs enter the market with more than just 2 devices. It's all about picking what you need.
