Aye, as long as you don't game 90W will do fine.

With my samsung 700Z7C max power I was able to pull from the wall was 113Watt. Dell inspiron should pull about the same since specs are almost identical. Watching video while charging the battery it pulled around 85 watt.

Went to Dell.no (norwegian dell page/store), and every inspiron model has got a price raise of 1000-1500,- NOK (167-250 USD). Bummer.

Suddenly the inspirons are behind asus and MSI again when it comes to performance/money ratio.

Msi....... Must be the biggest junk when it comes to cheap touchpads, casings & build quality. It just a lot of high end hardwares in a cheap box.

has anyone had any luck sourcing third party batteries or mains adapters?
i was wondering if both of these would be the same for both the 17R and 17R SE?
    can anyone help?!?

Got one of this babies - the i5 one. I upgraded it with an intel 330 SSd and 2x4GB Kingston hyperx CL9 1600.
Pretty happy with it and quite impressed with the build quality. The anti-glare display is great and the performance is excellent for the price i payed.
Edit: Sound is impressive for a laptop as well - it's my first laptop with a 2.1 Sound System. :)

Only one issue i got with it. While at first I was happy when i read that it will come with an 90W AC adapter - after putting it to work by dual logging a certain MMO i was not that happy anymore. Why? I heard some clicking from the AC adapter and touching it i found it pretty hot.
I think i have to look for a 130W AC adapter, but in the mean time i will see how it works with 99% cpu trick.

Even so, I Hope everyone enjoys his 17R SE as much as I do :)

why are you in such a hurry................you still have a brand new 6-cell bat, who will last a long bit.

(ps....i NEVER buy non-original battery for my DELL.........they are often worse and sometimes you get problems with the id-reconnection on it.

i just want longer battery life and a second mains adapter as i use my notebook in 2 locations and prefer not to carry the mains adapter with me.
The mains adapter is the priority for me. I spoke to a guy at dell and asked if the adapter for the "normal" Inspiron 17R would work with the 17R SE and he said "er....I think so". not very helpful.

My advice is to stay well clear of eBay for batteries, especially Chinese sellers. None of those are official batteries. In my experience third party batteries and adapters are absolutely terrible and I would never again buy one.

Why not just buy them from Dell? These are the correct products are they not?

I read what you wrote and maybe that seller is fine, it does seem fine. But I've had a lot of experience of "original" and "genuine" batteries and chargers in the past, being clearly fake with terrible performance and quality. They often use stock images of the product that it is supposed to be not the one they are selling. The feedback rarely mentions this as the majority of buyers don't notice the difference.

All I am saying is to be wary of eBay, if the item advertises itself as genuine and isn't genuine when you receive it, get a refund. You're pretty well protected from it on eBay.

I personally won't buy another battery or adapter from eBay

As far as I know, the only battery for the 17R SE N7720 is the 6 cell, 48Wh. That's another thing to be wary of - if you see a battery for the 17R SE that claims to be anything but 6 cell and 48Wh it is in my experience most likely not genuine. If there was a better battery I don't think Dell would pass up an opportunity to sell it to you

why is all people so keen on SSD instead of MUCH BIGGER 7200rpm HD ??????????? its just a hard-drive for God sake,

in games you have no benefit of SSD (if we talking FPS, image quality, etc.....and thats the only thing who matters in games by the way......who cares if you have to wait 15min or 20min when when you install the games)

    movies ??? nada

    web browsing ???? nada

    text ??? nada

I'm not 100% sure that I will install one.. but when I do, I will use the SSD as primary disk and the HDD as storage drive.
I'm just asking in case I want one, which size will be good..

Some people love the fact that online their game will load first, so first on map. Or the fact that they don't have to wait 20s more for boot. Things like that.

Have you ever used one? (Because from the way you're talking, it sounds like you haven't) There's a huge improvement when using an SSD, even over a caching solution. Applications open and close much faster, files transfer faster, shutdown and bootup times are lowered considerably, and the whole machine feels a lot more responsive.

That is wrong, normal harddrives often causes lagspikes in games when accessing data on the HDD. This won't be a problem with an SSD.

Take diablo 3 for example, with an normal HDD it lags for about 5-10 minutes after starting up, before it normalizes and it has loaded alle needed files. After this it still lags randomly when accessing data on the HDD.
With an SSD that is an non-issue.

And general feel and responsiveness is so much better, startup/resume is faster and so on.

I'd never go back to an regular HDD as boot drive/drive for most used apps.

baaahhh..............who cares about Diablo ??? mention some real games instead....

i bought a expensive 128GB SSD to my SXPS 16 long time ago..............i regret myself bigtime...............such a waste of money and loose of hard-drive space............

SSD is just a expensive over-rated gadget.......IF not, you transfer data A LOT all time.........then i can see the purpose buying SSD,

    but in "ordinary" use........it just a fashion-gadget.

ps.. .i never (ever) have issues with my 7200rpm in games.......thats the fact.

Sure, I could mention World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The old republic and probably any other large MMO type game as examples for games where the HDD could cause lagspikes ;) Even in StarCraft 2 there is a bit HDD-lag in the start of a mission.

@ skrallbe: both. As you can see in my sig, i have fitted my 7720 with an Intel 330 SSD.

Regarding the SSD argument - the dual storage option is marvelous. One SSD for OS and frequently used apps/games and one HDD for storage purposes - kits, multimedia stuff and all the crap that one likes to keep at hand but is not worthy to waste precious SSD space.
I had that on my beloved G53jw (120GB Corsair Force drive plus 500GB/7200rpm hdd) and when i decided to replace it, I looked specifically for a laptop with 2 drive bays.
Till now I very happy with the 7720.

Well thats your use case my friend, however, SSDs are far superior for almost every usage model. For example, I play a text simulation that is basically just a huge database. It does tons of tiny reads and writes. IOPS is where its at on these types of games, and SSDs slaughter mechanical hard drives on these types of things. In fact.. sequential data transfer is the one area where a mechanical raid array could in theory match a fast ssd.

    Hey guys,
i read that there are problems about overheating while playing games or anything else. You could try reducing the power of cpu at 75% from 100% that uses, by going in plan power settings. It will reduce the cpu temp about 10-15 degrees.Sorry for my bad english, im from greece.

You can replace the 2GB dimm with 4GB one to reach 8GB total.
Or if you really use memory intensive programs, you can replace both dimms with 2x8GB for a maximum 16GB RAM.

You have the version with 32GB SSD, set up as a caching drive it should give about same startup time as an regular SSD setup.

Hey guys, I'm about to buy this laptop, I have 2 questions though, any info would be much appreciated.

    1. What color should I get? I've seen here in Romania it's sold in silver, dark silver and the more expensive "anodized alluminum". Is the latter worth the extra bucks?

    2. It's about the laptop's mSata SSD. In the future I would like to replace it with a bigger one. Is the mSATA slower than regular SATA SSDs? I've seen msata one have speeds of up to 250 mb/s while the regular SATA have speeds of up to 500 mb/s. Is the speed difference so big, actually twice as fast? Thanks.

Anything kept on the cache drive will start as fast as using a SSD. However, eventually you'll find some work that does not fit in that 32 GB.
