I originally got my notebook with a WXGA screen (1440 X 900) and the screen looked beautiful. Very clear, crisp, perfect.

I just switched screens, and the new one, a WUXGA (1920 X 1200) looks rather dull, and grainy.

It definately isn't as crisp as the WXGA.

    Is it normal?

not normal. in fact, i'd say impossible.

    a wuxga (1920x1200) lcd has 2.3M pixels
    a wxga+ (1440x900) lcd has 1.3M pixels

a wuxga lcd is 1 million pixels crisper than a wxga+

fonts and images should clean, crisp and sharp and a high quality video file should look fantastic

i disagree .. almost always wuxga will appear this way due to a much lower brightness rating and usually lower contrast ratio. a reason why many dont like wuxga. yes the picture should be nice and detailed and sharp but imo wuxga will look somewhat darker and rather a bit lifeless compared to wxga+.. ive seen TONS of screens now. if you had got a dual lamp screen i can say this is not the case. they are super bright and amazing looking

yes, theoretically wuxga should be better but practically wxga+ looks much better.

    totally disagree.

once you use a high res screen, everything else looks like a toy.

yoozer i agree fully with your point there but look at the actual specs of the displays wuxga ALWAYS has a much much lower brightness rating unless its a dual lamp screen, and almost always a lower contrast ratio. they also a lot of times have a worse response rating as well. i use a wuxga and i agree i would take one over a wxga+ but once he has had the super bright wxga+ i can totally see why he would say what he is. i believe the wxga+ is rated at between 300-400 for brightness while the dell wuxga is around 180. thats a HUGE difference...imo i would much rather have the higer res. my favorite is the wsxga, wuxga is great but if i had the cange id take wsxga on a 17" the 5791 only had a matte screen and i wanted glossy so i stuck with the wuxga.. otherwise i would have wsxga .. there was a huge difference in the ratings between them even on my system

Well, my LCD is made by Samsung, SEC3155 WUXGA

The other monitor, WXGA, is also made by Samsung, SEC 3258and it is beautiful.

Basically I need to know if this is worth asking Dell for a replacement?

    And thanks for your replies!

imo the sec3155 and 3355 SUCK BALLS. i would get rid of that thing. imo that one and the 3355 are two of the worst screens quality wise i have seen in a long time

    Don't worry about the brand...

    Worry about the quality.

If you are not happy with its quality..

Go to the device manager / monitor / device information / browse through the available information, second line from the drop down menu

    LG WUXGA > anything else

I have the WUXGA on my E1705 and it blows away everything Ive looked at. High res has so many advantages over the lower res WXGAs screens unless youre blind. You must have a bad display because everyone is jealous of my LCD.

Anyone with an LG WUXGA 1920x1200 know what the part number for it is? I think I'm going to have Dell replace my Sammy 3155 and want to come to them prepared. Thanks in advance.

on a 17", the WUXGA is really nice and as a personal preference I prefer it to the lower resolutions. However, on anything smaller, it's a bit on the tiny side.

I have had WUXGA on my 15.4" for 3 years, and before that UXGA on a 15" (4 years). It is absolutely wonderful on smaller screens too!

According to Dell website, WUXGA on 17 inches screen has 260 nits of brightness compare to 220 nits from WXGA+, but they have the same resolution. If I want to buy E1720, I would go for WUXGA because the screen is brighter than WXGA+. In contrast, WSXGA+ on E1520 has only 200 nits while WXGA+ has 250 nits. In addition, WXGA has 220 nits. I had 3 laptops, and they are Dell. I always pick the default resolution. Personally, I think WSXGA+ is overkill for 15.4" screen.

I also wonder that 20-40 nits is making any different in term of brightness. Can anyone explain to me because I am listenning.

Does anyone know what the Hardware ID or part number is for the LG WUXGA 1920x1200 screen?
