Received my Dell 1720 early last week and have loved it. Decided to purchase 4gb of Dual Channel memory from New Egg, received it earlier today and cannot seem to install it right. I tried one stick at a time and reversed sticks but the system will not start up. The second I put the old memory in it works fine. Am I missing a certain bios or feature I am supposed to do. (I have A03)

I then decided to see if it was just the memory that was bad, put it in my Mac and it worked and read fine.

    Memory Details:

    mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Notebook Memory

    Thanks for any help!

The newer Inspirons should be able to take 4 GB.
Maybe this particular RAM module just won't work with the Inspiron 1720 (though it works with the M1710, according to one of the reader reviews).

I have an Inspiron 1720 with A03 bios, and I purchased the Patriot
    kit from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220256

I had no problems. I do not see why the Mushkin does not work in the 1720, but specs for Mushkin did not list SPD while Patriot did ... see the links labeled "Manufacturers Product page" on Newegg's listing for each.

Side note: Mushkin's web price lower than Newegg @ $144

Try this detection utility if you wish to stick with Mushkin:
    http://www.mushkin.com/_detect/detect.asp

Also read through Mushkin's forums .... a few Dell users got caught with
the wrong spec'd memory as well..... it does seem to relate to SPD

Well thanks for the help everyone, I am going to just return it to Newegg and probably try again or call and just switch to Patriot.

    I just installed Geil 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Notebook Memory in my E1505, although Dell says the max ram is 2GB. Works just fine...

Well called up NewEgg and got the Mushkin memory returned and they sent me G. Skil memory overnight to replace it. They were sold out of the Patriot. But put G. Skil in and worked just fine, not sure what was wrong with Mushkin but didn't want to take my chances again.
