I have a Dell 15r N5110 i5-2410M with 8gb ram. Dell states that 8 gb is the maximum I can put in this machine. On Intel's website it states that the i5-2410M can accept 16gb ram. Does the motherboard or bios determine the highest amount or is it the processor?

The memory controller (now on the CPU) determines the absolute maximum amount of RAM you can use (in this case 16GB), but sometimes a poorly written BIOS may set the limit lower. In Dell's case you can usually go somewhere between the maximum official spec (8GB) and the hard limit (16GB), but no guarantees.

I've yet to see Dell be really picky about BIOS limits and memory in recent memory. It should able to handle 16 GB, OEMs just don't want to post unofficial specifications that they have not tested.
