I don't know what it is, or maybe its just the way the system works.

But basically, but something is constantly on even when I just have the laptop on with a few IE windows, you can especially feel it just to the left of the touchpad. From time to time, I will also hear the the noise coming from it and it till slow down, then start up again.

I mean, its not a big issue, but is something wrong with the laptop?

This happens when the CPU load is as low as just 5%, temperatures around 42-45 degrees Celsius.

    Thanks

Sounds like the hard drive to me.Could be the vibrating problem the Seagates 7200 have.

I think you're hearing/feeling a combination of both. Whatever you feel under the palmrest is probably a vibrating HDD, and whatever you hear throttling up and down, is probably the fan.

What would cause an idle fan to throttle?

In terms of the HDD Vibrating, any solution to that?

    Thanks

The fan's probably not idle. It's probably idling for a little bit, spinning up, spinning down, idling for a little bit, spinning up, spinning down... etc.

Ah, any settings I can change to idle it, or is it just the way it is expected to behave?

Ok, for the harddrive vibration, I confirmed that by putting the HD to sleep mode and it stops.

The best solution seems to be to replace the current one with the WD Scorpio Blue 5400 RPM Drive. What do I need to do to make sure I get something that fits the laptop properly?

And, can I use the Dell DVDs to boot up and install Windows on the new HD?

What hard drive is in it now?Check in your Device manager under Disk drives.

If its a Seagate 7200rpm you could complain to Dell about it and they might replace it because it is a known issue for some Seagate hard drives.

If it is a Seagate go to Dells 1558 support site and see if there is a firmware update for it.
Seagate released a updated firmware that helps the problem.

The current harddrive seems to be Dell OEM. But I think its Seagate manufactured. I used drive detect and following information cae up:

    Model: ST9500420AS, Serial: 5VJ2V8S0, Firmware: 0004SDM1

There are no available downloads for Storage under Dell Support for my system.

    Thanks

    Yep.

That is the one that has the issues.Clicking and Vibrating.

There is a firmware update on the 1557's support page.Maybe they havnt gotten to yours yet.

With that said alot of people say the firmware update didnt fix the problem anyway.

I would complain to Dell about it and demand my hard drive be replaced but thats just me.

    I have the same HDD

    ST9500420AS Momentus 7200.4 SATA 3Gb/s 500-GB Hard Drive
Did you ever found a resolution to it?

Pls let me know as I am debating if I should return the laptop or try to get a replacement. Is there a good 500GB replacement available.

I have the same problem and need advice. There is a very, very frequent soft noise as of something spinning up, starting and stopping. At first I thought it was the fan, but this noise can be heard under the fan when the fan obviously comes on. I think now it is the hard drive -- it sounds like a little spinning or hissing or static-like sound. It occurs much of the time, even with just Web surfing. Is this normal and I just have to live with it, or should I call Dell? I just received this laptop less than a week ago. And is it something to do with the fan, or is it the hard drive?

I have the Studio 1558 i5-540 with a 500GB HD that is 5400 rpm. When I looked in device drivers, it says it is the wdc wd5000bevt-75ZAT0 ATA device. When I google that, it looks like that is the Western Digital Scorpio Blue Drive?

    Any ideas?

Thanks, I'm wondering then what can be done? I mean, if Dell puts in another identical drive, I wonder if it will just do the same thing?
