    Hi

Once in a while (once in a week or so) my Dell 1558 gets powered off on its own and i believe its due to over-heating issue.

Today also it happened but doesnt even boot and gets powered off within 5-15 seconds if I try to boot (doesn't even go upto OS loading). Could this be CPU fan problem?

    Pls advice,
    Thanks,
    Prvn

    I would try;

    - Using a multi-meter and testing your AC adapter
    - Removing the battery and trying to power your system
    - Using a known good 65W or 90W Dell AC adapter
    - Removing the battery and AC adapter and holding down the power button for 30 seconds 2-3 times.

After all of this and it still does not power on, likely you have a motherboard power circuitry problem. Are you still under warranty?

    Thank you for the reply.

No It's NOT under warranty (is of 2 years old - was under warranty for first 1 year only)

I tried with working power adapter and working battery both gave me same behaviour. So I opened the laptop completely and found LOT of dust at CPU fan and other parts. Cleaned and reassembled and then it worked fine without any problems for 2-3 days.

Just now I got this problem again and the problem is consistent now.
The latest behaviour is it simply gets powered off within 2-4 seconds after powering ON. CPU fan is functioning but making loud noise.

    Pls advise,
    Thanks

replace your fan assembly if it is louder than it normally is. I got my dad's studio 17 and he was saying it turned off on him sometimes. Loaded prime 95 on it and it has been running just fine for the last 6 hours

    Thanks for your reply.

Now the fan is completely dead (not rotating at all).

Could the problem be with just fan or cable or mother PS circuitry board? Please suggest.

I'm from UK and please suggest from where to buy parts in case of faulty cpu fan?

    Thanks

I highly doubt it is a faulty fan, your machine will still power on and POST. Likely you need a new motherboard.

the fans should spin up during the Post start up. if not try replacing it - its only a 5 - 10 dollar part.
