This morning I turned on my Dell to find a message displaying to the effect of The AC Power Adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not recharge. So that means when I try to charge my battery again it is not going to at all.

I have not had time to investigate further as I am at work but the outcome could look bleak.

I hear that Dell laptops have notoriously dodgy motherboards according to Dell's forums is this true? Has anyone had this problem and if so what is the solution.

Have you updated the BIOS recently? This is usually the culprit, it shouldnt be a big deal. I doubt its the motherboard either.

No but I will try it, hopefully it is just a glitch and not a long term problem. I get conflicting reports. Updating the BIOS for some is fine, others suggest the MB is fried and the sensor on the AC plug is not recognised (?)... a new Dell AC adapter will fix the solution.

    Guess I will find out.

    Try the following for now:

    1) Take out the battery pack and unplug AC power

    2) Hold the power button for 30 sec+ to flush residual charge

    3) Plug in AC and try starting up again
