Hi, I have a 2.8 year old Dell Studio 1555 which won't boot. I get a 6 beep error code and no screen display. The HD spins and the fans are on. According to the Dell support site, it says there is a GPU issue.

Is it normal for a GPU to last less than three years? It seems pretty poor tech. I'm wondering if Dell will repair this laptop under the UK sale of Goods act. I would expect a £500 laptop to last more than 2.5 years of serviceable use.

    Any thoughts?

It's definitely not that common for the GPU to fail on the 1555. You probably have some other motherboard issue. The standard warranty on these things is a year, so unless you have an extended warranty, you are probably out of luck. Then again, I know your consumer protection laws are stricter in the UK, so YMMV.

It's like there is a countdown for failure... Mine does the exact same thing, recently. I found a lot of people having this problem too.

Well, after three long, polite but firm conversations with Dell support, their legal rep and their customer relations and engineer was dispatched to replace the main-board as a good will gesture. He pulled out a massive piece of fluff which was lodged between the fan and exhaust vent, the only way to get at it was from inside...lol. Unfortunately, the new board was DOA...so he's coming back tomorrow with some more bits...hopefully these ones work.
