So is the dell worth getting with all the problems people have been facing. ive been looking at the sony fz but i would like to get the 1520. Im concerned about the headphone jack problem and the grainy screen problem. Is the screen that bad for someone whose been using 400-500 dollar laptops his whole life or is it very bad. I know that they use 6 bit screens or whatever, are sonys much better?

Also, i connect my laptop to pc speakers, will this create the problem also? what if i use my cellphone around my notebook?

These are my main concerns and I dont want to have to continue shopping since i really like this computer otherwise. Thanks for any help!

So far the "problems" have come down to:

1] In order to get the full 700Mhz clock speed for the 8600M-GT you have to Overclock it with software, but this is apparently easy to do, and it still runs cool (albeit with reduced battery life)

2] Some have reported less than ideal viewing angles for the WXGA and WXGA+ screens (but the WSXGA+ is much better there)

3] Some have reported that their screens are not as sharp as the Sony Vaio's

4] Some have reported that they hear some system noise in the audio jack with cheaper earbuds that goes away with higher quality earbuds

5] Some have reported crooked stickers

6] Some have reported a high pitched whine from the HD

The screen is the only thing Im worried about at this point. Some people have said the highest quality screen (WSXGA+) looks absolutely beautiful.

If my only problem is a noisy audiojack, I probably will be happy. I'll either get it fixed, or spend $20-$30 for a plug-in sound card.

As a side note: Can anyone tell me where you are getting the more detailed "status" of your order? The thing I look at just says "production" - and when you click on the "info" thing it lists the stages, but doesnt have anything like "building" or "boxing" - where do you get that level of detail?

I have an inspiron 1520 and i have 4, 5 and 6. Okay look, dell is basically a company that has good value for the performance. About the screen, It doesn't bother me too much, mine is grainy... but I dunno how grainy? The headjack noise is alright.. (if u dont use earbuds/headset) I just use the speakers that r built into the computer so its alright. And the stickers.. they're "okay" they're just stickers right? Mine isnt really that crooked. tiny bit but it shouldnt piss you off. The dell is worth getting if you want the performance, other than that. If you want to spend more for the same specs on a sony, go ahead. If you have the money. BUY THE SONY INSTEAD.

i must say i have the 1440x900 and the screen is semi-bright, i can't imagine how bright teh wsga+ is.

other problems I noticed include and are not limited to:

    1. CD Rom drive, you can't tilt the computer if there is a cd rom spinning in there or it WILL spin out of place. This is due to the fact that the cd rom drive is humongous and the cd is not locked in. This was a big disappointment.

    2. Scratches, apparently through factory process, my computer has been kinda scratched up at random places representing a shoddy job.

    3. No HDMI, this is harped on.

    4. Ease of Bluetooth. If you plan on reformatting, DO NOT, and i repeat, DO NOT turn off your bluetooth before doing so. apparently once your bluetooth is off, it's hard to turn it back on without the drivers and the drivers can't b installed unless your bluetooth is on. it's all very stupid.

There is no HDMI but you can by an Adapter from dell that connects to the yellow port that adds component and rca digital audiop out ports.
