When I play games, my Dell 1520 on the the fan side blows harder and gets hot, is this ok, how long should i use it that way then take a break?

if your using it on a desk and not blocking the fan you should be just fine.

Is it louder than you expected it to be?

That means your notebook is working just fine!
When playing games or using any CPU/GPU intensive software, you are stressing your hardware, hence they run hotter. Your notebook detects this temperature increase and therefore the fan is switched on higher to rid the heat.
If your notebook is fairly new, you shouldn't worry about it overheating. If the heat and the noise of the fan bothers you, you may want to buy a cooling pad.

bobblaine -- do you have the 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm HD?

That may be the reason. I literally just ordered my 1420 after scanning every thread on this forum for the past month. I was about to get the 7200 when it seemed that the speed differential was negligible and several users mentioned the possibility of it making the wrist rest area warmer as well as using more of the battery life. Of course this all depends on what you are doing with it.

If you are noticing good speeds and frame rates during game play and load time of other programs then you made the right choice.

The HDD has nothing to do with it, i think you just weren't expecting the noise.

But i'm pretty sure after hearing it was your first laptop that this is normal.

You can call dell support though and have them determine if you have a malfunctioning fan or if you need to download BIOS/driver updates.

It happens after 20min of intense graphics, then slows down after 6min of hard blowing.

That is normal. just try to keep your vents clean and also try and buy a cooling pad

this is mostly normal as graphic intensive tasks usually heat up the components
im sure the GPU and the HDD dnt help either
alternatvely you could try running some 3rd parrty applications to check temperatures and post them to compare them with other 1520 users
you could also try keeping the fans at the bottom of your laptop and the sides if any free so as to allow better air circulation
