    I have a dell 1520 that ive been using for quite some time and the lcd just went out. I have a feeling its either the inverter or backlight. Its been pink lately when i bring it out of sleep and today it just died.

    When i power on it flickers a black/pink for a split second and goes dead.

    Im hoping it isnt the lcd panel itself and just the inverter or backlight.

    It is the 1650x1080 resolution and im not sure if that matters when picking inverter/backlight.

    Any advice/help would be great.

    Just to rule out the motherboard have you tried displaying externally to a monitor?

    Unfortunately there's no way to test between an inverter or an LCD without replacing one or testing with a known working one. I would try an inverter first, they are cheap shouldn't be more than ~40 dollars. If not you can try this;

    DELL INSPIRON 1520 LAPTOP LCD SCREEN 15.4" WSXGA+ MATTE CCFL $90

    1680x1050 resolution for ~105 shipped in the US.

    tested it with a external right away, I was extermely happy it wasnt the motherboard.

    just seems like the backlight or inverter is out :mad:

    Well that's good to hear that your motherboard isn't defective.

    Unfortunately if your backlight is defective you have to change out your entire LCD. You can change them but on most LCDs it is impossible or too much of a hassle. My first suspect is probably the inverter. However for your Dell (and many from the 3-5 year old time period) Dell did not include the short hand P/N on the inverter. They only have the long Dell 20-23 digit PPID. Your best bet is just to search on Ebay Inspiron 1520 inverter. Be wary of those 13 dollar inverters!

    try performing a dell lcd bist test and see
    press and hold the D key and simultaneously press the power button to turn on the system
    if u see colors changing on the screen than it wudnt be an issue with the lcd either!

    It sounds to me the inverter is bad.
    The positive is that it is also the cheapest to replace.
