My Inspiron 1520 will be arriving in just a few minutes. However, I've heard that they run quite cool. Nobody here complained about overheating. I've never used a cooling pad so I really couldn't tell you if that would fit.

Actually, my 1520 runs pretty cool as well, however.. (yes there is a however).. keep in mind the cooling intake is on the bottom left hand side of the laptop. My first gaming session with the 1520 lasted about 30 minutes with the processor and vid card maxed out to make me want a cooling mat. The left hand side of the laptop was down right hot! I tend to sit in a recliner to do my homework, play games, etc. and when I do, the vent is in the perfect spot to be totally blocked by my leg. Of course we all know that "laptop" doesn't necessarily mean "LAP TOP COMPUTER" but in my case it does. Now, the unfortunate thing is that the stores around here only carry the targus chill mat, which is what I had to buy. It stinks. It did help with the heat, but the fans inside are very low RPM, and the thing is too small to cover the entire bottom of the 1520. Will the Targus chill mat help? Yes. Is it the best one? I highly doubt it.

Some better brands, and options to boot:

I have not tried any of these so if you do, especially the magic cooler, please post a review for use with Dell laptops. ;P

I have a 1720, which has similar fan placement. I like to play NFSMW on my lap, and the first time I tried it OC'd, it was hot-hot-hot. But I found out I don't need a special laptop cooler. Put any flat surface between your legs and the laptop (I'm using a cutting board now) and it restores normal air flow. My internal chip temps are back to the mid 50s at idle and no more than 65-70 at OC'd gaming max.

My Inspiron 1520 is running extremely cool. I am using it all day long and it's not heating up. I'm actually more worried about my stereo system which I'm using as speakers for my notebook. It's getting quite warm, and it doesn't have a fan.

Yes the 1520 is quite cool, CPU at 32C, HDD at 40C, and graphics card is at 50C according to speedfan, and the bottom of the laptop is slightly warm on the bottom. I also just came from playing a game not too long ago so its still cooling down slightly from that. I don't think a cooling mat is needed.
