Hello Everyone,
As some of you might know, I replaced my grainy screen 4 times and still have the same problem. Most Dell Technician claims to understand what a grainy screen is. They keep telling me to change different parts that are totally irrelevant, for example, motherboard, graphics card. I am conducting a survey to see how many people have the same problem. Please post how Dell solved the same problem for you.
I want to bring this survey up to Dell, so that they can be aware that I am not the only one that has this problem. Please post the number of times you have replaced the screen.
Please vote if you have a WSXGA or WSXGA+
Please vote yes even if you have the problem and do not care
Please do not vote if you do not have a glossy screen because it will never occur on non-glossy screens.
Many people don't know what a grainy screen is, even most Dell technicians don't know what it is. A grainy screen is not an internal defect. It is the LCD that is defective, the glossy coating wasn't done well. A grainy screen can't be screenshotted, but here is a picture where someone recreated the problem to show people.

Great thread, I hope it works out well for you!
This is precisely one of the main reasons that I didn't buy a Dell, but went with HP instead. -
i saw 3 grainy sec3350 (wsxga+) screens from dell. now i have a ifl-90 with a grainy screen. i'm cursed. hhehe... the ifl-90 screen, though grainy, is still much better than the sec3350.

I have a wsxga+ screen and it's not grainy at all.
-

I have WXGA+ (you call that one WSXGA) no matter...its an AUO2077 and it is not grainy, or at least I don't notice it...which would be strange as its not my first LCD.
So all in all not a bad screen. -
Yes, yes, I know somebody is going to say "you don't realize it but your screen IS grainy". I have seen many computer screens and looked at many laptops before deciding to purchase this one and I can assure you that my screen is not grainy. -
5 dell's i had. 3 were grainy, 1 had horrible light bleeding the other was just awful looking color wise everything including whites looked blue or yellow. it was really bad. my lg i have in my sager is a tiny bit grainy but not anything bad
-
i wonder why this thread is getting rated low - i think its a good idea to get some real numbers - see how many people are experiencing the problem - its just too bad that people who have had multiple screens exhibiting the problem cant vote for each bad screen - lol
anyway - i had the 1440x900 screen - it was horrible - i would have taken a replacement, but dell wanted to ship me a refurb - so i asked for a refund... -
wow I order atleast 7 1520 laptops a month for clients and I have only seen 1 with a grainy screen. -
This is my 2nd 1520. The first being a WXGA+ and this one being a WSXGA, and I must say, both screens have been gorgeous. Although, both are LG's I must have gotten very lucky!
-
this week i got a 15" inspiron with the 1440 high resolution screen.....i love it. it just looks awesome. i've been reading the posts here about the screens and have been worried but either i lucked out or they improved quality.

Nice to see some people are getting some nice LG screens.

You should have checked the option for showing screen names of those who vote.

Just got my new 1520 yesterday WSXGA+. On the packing list the part number was sort of weird - UN00 something..... so I got worried. I logged in online to Dell Support and looked up my serial number and the part is listed as XK309 !!!!
So far the screen is really good. I even tested the grainy screen detector image on NBR and it looks good. It's really sharp, no light leakage that I can tell, and the 1650x1050 resolution is amazing - so much screen real estate - I have never had a screen so large.
Thanks Dell! -
Good to hear the new patches are good screens.

I just wanted to drop in and say that it's not just Dell that has had the grainy screen problems. I just received my new HP 8510p, and the screen is terribly grainy and the colors are all washed out.
After some research, it turns out that in particular, the Samsung screens that some manufactures are using are one of the main causes of the problem, and sure enough, that's the brand of HP screen used in my new notebook. Apparently the LG screens are the good ones, if you are able to get one. Mine with the Samsung screen is being returned.
I'm really surprised that these screens have passed these companies so called "quality control" testing. This should be a real embarrassment to them all, and most of all, Samsung. -
The screen on the 1520 I sent back was slightly grainy -- only a problem when looking at very very small text. The reason I sent it back was because whites were yellowish and other colors were off too. It also had rotten viewing angles. It was a WSXGA+ screen with Hardware ID SEC3350.

I voted no. Although, i do not know how to tell if my Screen is an LG.
-
Download this great program called "PC Wizard"; it will tell you.

Glossy screens are great when you first get them, but once your mind merges with your computer and you become accustom to them, they become more of a hindrance and then you wish you could take the damn thing off. Thats my experience at least.

^ im the same way - im thinking it all depends on the actual screen quality
i had a glossy screen on my old toshiba notebook and i loved it - i just bought an asus that also has a glossy screen and its immaculate - everything is just so clear on it - the colors really pop - for me, having a high quality screen is the key - regardless if its matte or glossy
there are really good glossy screens (that you can look at for hours on end) - and then there are your migraine inducing screens (such as the sec's used in some dells) -
I've recently come to the same conclusions.
