I received my 1520 a little over 30 days ago. The screen, when the light setting are not at max setting makes a strange electrical buzzing noise. It will stop if I orient the screen in a certain position, set the brightness to the max, or plug in the AC. I believe it may be the inverter but i'm not 100% sure. I really do not want to send my notebook in for repair since I use it for college, so I'm hoping someone can provide me with some instructions on how to possibly fix the problem.

    Thanks

I am having this problem too, with a machine I just picked up today.

I can adjust the brightness by leaving the monitor at max brightness and using the graphics adapter settings to reduce brightness instead. In this case, the hum goes away.

Has anyone been able to find a solution to this buzzing problem without having to send their laptop in for repairs?

I noticed that if I push into the bottom frame of my screen (gently), the buzzing goes away... but this obviously isn't a permanent solution.

Just to update I received the laptop fixed yesterday. They replaced the lcd with a nicer model at the same resolution. It's brighter, not grainy, and without the annoying buzzing/rattling sound the previous screen made. BUT the bad news is they scratched the bezel in a few places, not sure how their going to help me with that; a rep is going to contact me in a day or two regarding my options.

How long did it take you to get the laptop back?

I'll put up with buzzing just so I don't part with this machine, but I'm curious to know how long a normal repair like this would take.

You can always request for Dell to send you the LCD and you can perform the replacement yourself. It's really easy and you only need a screw driver :) (I know "easy" can vary depending on someones skills but it's basically just unscrewing the LCD and unhooking some data/power cables).

Had the same problem and had posted about it on the forums. Called up the CC today and they're gonna replace the LCD.

Any things I should keep in mind before they replace it... as in the resolution of my current screen... the model number etc? If yes, where can I find them ?

That sounds like a good idea, but does the LCD come separate from the case?

I have permanent "STOP" security stickers on the lid of my laptop and unless I can remove the lid and put it on a new one, I'm not going to be removing it.

If the LCD can be removed from it's housing - that's a different story :)

My new LG screen has the buzz but im not going to let it bother me.. using the Nvid control panel to adjust the brightness fixes the issue... I'm just glad I got an LG for a screen replacement and not another Samsung.. thats good enough for me.

Honestly, I don't care for the "buzz", but if the buzzing is some kind of indication that the LCD will be failing soon, then I have some concern because a non-functioning screen is a non-functioning computer for me. :(

I dont think its an indication of Failure.. however, if it does fail off to the depot lappy goes lol. It's fine right now so im not worrying about it xD.

The LCD actually sits inside the frame of the lid, so it's much easier to remove than it looks. It's not as highly integrated/impossible to remove as it seems.

I made a little guide here as I don't think I've run across a guide on the web that was specifically for the Inspiron 1520.

    1) Make sure the battery/power cord are remove and the system is powered down.

    2) Tilt the LCD screen ALL the way backwards (really...all the way...) and remove the panel that has the Inspiron 1520 logo on it above the keyboard. You just need to use a flat head screw driver at the top right since it has a tiny lip to yank it up with.

    3) Unplug the data/power cables+the screwed in wire underneath the panel. Once Dell sends you the LCD it's really obvious which cables to unplug once you can see them, so I wouldn't worry.

    3) Remove the feet (4) and the sticky pads (2 near near the microphone/web cam) from the laptops frame.

    4) Unscrew the 6 screws from the above spots on the frame.

    5) Now the fun (and most scary part), you need to get your nails along the rim of the frame and pull it away from the back of the case. This is the hardest part. I'd say be a bit gentle yet also forceful in doing this. The first time is always scary (especially near the bottom of the frame...it's hardest there but it's definitely doable so don't give up).

    6) Remove the 8 screws (4 each on the direct sides of the LCD itself).

    7) Pull the LCD out of the frame slightly, while doing this remove the data cables at the top/back of the LCD going to the microphone & web cam (depending if you have one). They're tiny cables and easily removed.

    8) That's it, you've removed your Inspiron 1520's LCD :). Installing the new one is basically like the above except when it arrives you'll need to install the new circuit board they send you (the big green circuit board on the back of the LCD) to your new LCD. It's a very plug and play affair with two plugs, one at the bottom of the LCD, one at the top so it won't give you any trouble I sense.

I wave any liability though if this all goes totally wrong, it won't, but I'm just saying :p.

    Wow! I appreciate the info.

I'm going to give Dell a call when I have some time and see if they will send me a replacement screen :)

Well the Dell dude came and replaced the screen. Thankfully its the same old LG screen without the buzz so I'm happy. The only thing that's bothering me the screen lid from the right side is letting some light through. The Dell dude tells me that its cuz the LCD has a light sensor but I'm so sure he's b*llsh*tting me. I had neve noticed this light escaping from the inner right side of the screen. Can anybody confirm this ?

    Update:

I tried to press the casing form the side also but the light does not go away. The funny thing is the light is not seen from any other side.

I've uploaded a photograph to make my point clear. The picture quality isn't too good but you'll get the idea of what I'm trying to say.
