I just recently stopped getting audio from the 3.5mm jack of my dell 1520. I checked if it was the jack or the headphones by using different headphones on the jack as well as testing them on Ipods. In both cases it seemed as if it was my a problem with my jack.

Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it? I am at boarding school so sending my computer away would be tough but if dell can send me replacement parts or give me instructions i could have the IT guys fix it...

    Thank you

It depends on what type of warranty you have. If you have onsite they will likely send a tech to your home for a motherboard replacement. First though, confirm its not disabled in the device manager, and then reinstall the drivers.

    okey...here's what worked for me:

the static you hear from your earbud is caused by hardware interferences from the other sound devices and modules, namely the microphone and the PC AV output. Disabling them would solve the problem.

    In plain English:

Open control panel, Classic Control Panel, Sound.

Under the "Playback" tab, select "Speakers/Headphones" and click "Properties" below. Then, in the new window opened, click on the "Levels" tab, and mute the "PC Speaker" by clicking on the blue speaker symbol behind it, and Voila! the annoying static should now be eliminated!

Post if this procedure works for you.

P.S. the Muting the PC speaker does NOT mute your laptop's on-board speaker, it only mutes the internal PC outlet jack, which is useless anyways, and interferes with your earphone jack, so there's no negative impacks to muting it....you'll never use it anyways.....
