    Hi,
I am using Dell Inspiron E1505 with windows vista Home premium version installed on it. It has 2 drives, of which C: contains all the operating system n stuff n D: recovery drive containing the files that can restore my system to manufacture settings. i have used it recently to restore my laptop to default settings. Of this recover drives 9.99GB, 4.5GB is used for this recovery contents.
Bt i want to use this drive for storing my data and use the complete C drive for installing my softwares games and all. so i tried moving the contents of D: drive to an external hard drive, bt few files cannot be moved. is there any possible way to cut all the contents and paste them to a Ext HDD. it throws an error " u need permission to access this files" bt i am the administrator n i have UAC turned off in my system. Also system restore is turned off for this drive.

Also if in later stages i want to use these contents of recovery drive to restore my system to the origina manufacturer settings can i use them from my Ext HDD directly r do i need to make a image of them n keep it so that i can use them properly??

can any one suggest me a better solution to free up my D drive completely n also use these files later for complete restoration to the original settings???
    Thanx in advance.
    Alex.

I'm a little lame on just how to do everything correctly and tend to ask like you and/or search for an answer.

You may want to try this. Maybe someone can chime in to say if it would work or not. Back up your doc, photos, favorites and all your settings, etc to your external HD and then reinstall Vista on your laptop using the CD, determining the partitions as you go. Then move everything back from your external hard drive, where you want.

As far as using your external hard drive as a recovery, I don't think you can unless you can boot from USB. You may have to change your BIOS or something. I know when I tried this, to back up to a Passport using Windows in the system tools menu. Everything moved but I couldn't figure out how to make a bootable disk, when Windows asked.
