I just purchased the 1500 Vostro and i've changed the battery from a 6 cell to a 9 cell. Now when i have the battery charger into the computer to the electric socket, the performance and brightness of the laptop is greatly noticeable compared to if i had it unplugged and actually using the batteries the laptop comes with. I assume when i unplug it, it is trying to conserve energy so that the battery life is longer correct ? Now is there a way for me to turn that off ? I would like to use the laptop at full performance even without the charger plugged in. And if i do this, how long will the battery last ( estimated ) .

Using the laptop at full power on the charger will reduce the battery life, perhaps greatly. You can check out one of the Vostro 1500 or Inspiron 1520 reviews for estimates on battery longevity.

Have to checked your power setting? If you using Dell look for the quick set icon (near the clock in the right hand corner) and left click. You should see power options or power scheme a couple of options including a maximum or high power option. If you did a reformatted or removed the quick set tools, which honestly I perfered to Windows on my old Dell. Go into the control panel to power options and check you power schema there.

I went to Control Panel and Power options, and i went under the Max Performance section and click "ok" but then nothing seems to be changing, the monitor seems to be still dim and hard to see.

When on battery you need to press the fn button and the up arrow a few times to get full brightness.
