I have a Dell 14z that is recently shutting down because it gets too hot. It never did that the first year I owned it. This occurs despite being on a desktop surface with reasonable ventilation

It is not running any major software when this happens, just browser programs.

Recently i started getting warnings that my battery was nearing end of cyle and would not hold a charge as long anymore.

Are these two things related? If not, what is causing the severe over heating?

Have you checked the heatsink and fan for dust? Also, keep an eye on the CPU load, if it goes 100% for unknown reasons, open the Task Manager and sort the process list by %. See if you can identify the program, or post the EXE name here.
