So I pick up a studio 14z partially because every review said the heat is not bad at all on this. I am getting a very good amount of heat to the point of being very uncomfortable to me after only like 45 minutes of internet browsing. The only real spot Im getting it is to the right of the touchpad. Everything else is pretty good (minus the exhaust port of course). Its really annoying me, especially since this isnt supposed to do this. Any thoughts or ideas? Anyone else have this problem or does it sound like a defect? Here is my configuration:

    14z
    p6500
    320 gb
    3gb ddr3
    backlit keyboard
    soundblaster audio
    720p
    vista 64 home premium

Download and run HWMonitor. What are your temperatures? It's entirely possible for it to feel hot but still be well within safe temperature parameters.

Okay, can I get a reliable link to the download and is it free? Anyone else feel a decent amount of heat to the right of the touchpad?

You can try CoreTemp and report us your CPU temperatures.

Your CPU looks slightly high, but certainly nothing dangerous. Were you doing any serious processing before this?

Nope, just using Microsoft Word and browsing the internet. Im just concerned because every review I have read about this laptop has said that there are no heat issues. It gets warm just 30 minutes into using it. I dont think this is normal and it is certainly annoying.

Hmm, mid 50s Celsius with Word and the internet...have you tried undervolting? I recommend you give it a try; you can make your CPU run cooler and save a bit of power, and there's really no risk associated with it, other than a chance for a BSOD if you take it too low, and even that's fixable with a reboot.

    Actually, pretty much:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824

Undervolting is the process of reducing the amount of voltage pumped into your CPU. Most CPUs draw significantly more than they really need, which leads to excess heat and power use. Undervolting allows you to take away some of this excess and make your processor more efficient and cool, without sacrificing any performance.

Follow that guide thread; it will tell you where to get RMClock (the tool used for undervolting), and exactly how to do it and test for stability.

my 14z ran very hot before undervolting. I have the t9550 and under 100% load it fell outside safe parameters relatively quickly (about 15 minutes to get to around ~90 celcius, at which point I stopped testing out of fear of meltage o_O)

Now, however, it can run max'd at .95v (instead of the stock crazy 1.35v) for a few hours and only get to about 70... This is still hot, but acceptable for me considering the difference. My fan runs loud for 10 minutes or so for every 30 minutes of gaming. Very satisfied after learning how to RMClock. The default voltages were not researched very well for our studio 14's.

Interestingly, the only portion of the computer that is noticibly hot to the touch is the area to the left of the touchpad after a fair bit of processing, where the exhaust ports are located. And, the fan runs loud quite a bit more when I have it sitting on my lap instead of a flat surface regardless of whether or not it is idle; but that's kind of a given.
