I'm looking for a bit of help and first off want to disclose that I'm not a super computer whiz. I'm not an idiot, but I apologize if some of the stuff sounds naive or stupid.
Anyhoo, I received my 1420 a little over 3 weeks ago (perfect...past the 21 day window) and noticed I had a battery problem. It basically wasn't fitting in snuggly and was very loose, so loose that it was obvious that in a few months it would be creating functionality problems. I called dell and they sent a technician to replace the bottom panel of the laptop...fine it fixed the problem.
Now I have a constant "cooling error" when booting up vista. The tech went back in and double checked to be sure the fan wasn't unplugged, but it was fine. Does anyone have any experience with this?? I am wondering if I just got a lemon and should really push for a replacement or just accept another technician, which will inevitably be Dell's solution. Another idea is that it could completely be a software issue...coming from Vista.
Any advice? Thanks in advance!

The loose battery is a common issue and talked about a lot in the forums, if it really bothers you it sounds like Dell have a fix, but it would seem to require a tech replacing the bottom of your laptop which if you don't have onsite would be annoying because you would have to mail the laptop in. Even if you do have onsite it would seem that it would take the tech a longtime to fix. The cooling problem seems like a real issue, and if I were you I would call Dell and get the problem solved with them.

What are you determining as a constant "cooling error". Is it locking up? Or does it just feel hot

I just recieved my 1420 a week ago and I'm getting the error "ac adapter cannot be determined". Only charges sometimes. Called dell and they sent me a new adapter but it still does it. I have to send the computer it back to them, and let them work on it. I read somewhere that it might be the motherboard. It sucks i'll be without a computer for a week or so.

I think Dell has a 30 day money back instead of 21-day like HP. You may still have a day or 2 to return it for full refund if you want.

I think there is a VERY simple fix for that. When the error message pops up, unplug the charger from your computer, and plug it back in. It happens to me all the time. If that doesn't fix it, then I guess you really do have a problem. There might have been a bad power surge while your lappy was plugged in.

Gee, I hope I don't have any problems with my 1420. But I wish the best of luck with yours, mpoulsen.
