See my sig. I also got the webcam, Intel 802.11G card, DVD RW, Bluetooth, 6 & 9 cell batteries, Vista Premium. Started with minimum config (1 yr warranty) and finally used $350 coupon for ~1060 before tax. :D Ship date 8/9. :(

Everyone else seems to be raving about the 1330 (too much $$$ for me) and the 1520 (too big/heavy for me), but the only other machine I'd really considered was the Macbook Black. It's about $1250 before tax right now, but who knows what will happen by the time my Dell ships! I've read that Vista is pretty good even compared to OS X, hopefully I'm not making a mistake.

As anyone who knows me will tell you I'm sort of a klutz. So, I went and got the 3 year, warranty + accidental protection. The 13" was too expensive and the 15" was too big/heavy.

Why is/are mine/these taking so long to ship?

I think I got a pretty good deal. I'm going to be so happy when it finally arrives.

I used the coupon code TSD1$NG00WFD4N to get $350 off and also complained about the wait time (30 days in my case) to a manager, who knocked off another $90.

If you want to use that code, I'd recommend you pick the most basic 1420 (the "Good" version) and then start adding options. Otherwise if you already start with a well equipped 1420, Dell already includes a stupid $139 or $267 coupon which cannot be combined with the one I listed.

There is a limit to the $350 coupon...It expires on the 12th or is valid for the first 4000 Inspirons (whichever comes first). So you better act fast.

In my opinion, I'd suggest that people reorder their laptops to take advantage of this great deal. BUT first check if the coupon is still valid. Also, if the wait time is long after the reorder, then call and complain for an addition discount. Don't be afraid to tell them that other companies are offering similar machines for similar prices in a very short amount of time, and that if Dell cannot make you a happy customer by offering some kind of incentive, then you'll have to cancel your order. :)

One other thing I want to point is that if you pick an additional accessory with the laptop, such as a bag or a cushtop, the coupon doesn't apply. I'm not sure why.

    Hope that helps.

I ordered one with the coupon and unfortunately added a case.. But the coupon did apply.. but it only reduced the amount by 140$ not 350. At any rate it looks like the coupon is dead now.. I think I still got a good deal. This price does not include the Jet Cabernet case which adds 26.78 to the order:

HAHA! The 5th Element was on TV the other night and something came to mind while watching it: The 5th Element should be shown at least once a day, everyday on at least one channel on TV. Next time someone asks what some of my favorite movies are, I'll be sure to include this one since I never think of it. I think this about sums up the general appeal of the movie: if you ever catch The 5th Element on TV as you're flipping through channels, you'll find yourself sitting there until the end of the movie, without fail every time. You just can't ignore it.

    Now as for my order:
    Inspiron 1420, Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, 2.0GHz, 800Mhz 4M L2 Cache
    2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ TL LCD
NVIDIA (R) GeForce TM Go 8400M GS with 128MB dedicated graphic memory
    120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, English
8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive for Inspiron
    Integrated High Definition Audio 2.0
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card
Integrated 2.0 mega pixel web cam
    Creative Earbud EP630
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, for Inspiron 1420
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Additional Battery, for Inspiron 1420
    Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Mod
    3 Yr In-Home Warranty + 15 month McAfee

Total: $1160.88, plus got a free upgrade to 2nd day shipping AND a $100 coupon good for anything on Dell.com

I tried calling in to see if they could alter the order to include the 160GB HDD that is being offered for free, but they could not since it's "In Production" (even though the ship date is in the beginning of Aug). What the CSR did offer me though was a $100 coupon. Perhaps in a future call to Dell they'll exchange that coupon for an upgrade to Complete Care warranty but I'm not holding out for that. Any suggestions what I should order for $100? I would have gone for a 160GB internal 2.5" HDD but through Dell I'm sure that's way overpriced. Maybe one of those Jet/Cabernet Laptop Sling Bags from Belkin and something else...

Are they giving you a 2 August date for shipment of your laptop sleeve? I got the same one and that's what they're telling me. But on the accessories page it's got a "ships within 24 hours" note. I'm a little bugged about that, if I get my laptop weeks before the sleeve, which is what looks like is going to happen.

You could always get a travel charger and surge protector, or a travel charger and one of the cheaper Logitech mice (this is assuming that you actually DO travel with your laptop of course though :) ).

My laptop and sleeve are saying Aug 9 shipment. Maybe the sleeve won't be ready until Aug 2. I've seen it many times when accessory support takes longer to ship then the original device. Not much you can do about that. I seen that happen many times with the creative mp3 players. I remember waiting months for a case for a JB3 player back in 2001.

My trusty dell laptop had just died after 4 years, and my sister's desktop died within the next day. By luck I happened on the University deals dell was having, and got this order, which has been shipped today! I don't have a lot of money, so I went for almost the most basic everything except video card and wireless. I think it's a pretty good deal! The only thing is, will 1.5ghz be fast enough? My old laptop was a Pentium M at 1.3ghz! That's not much slower for being 4 years old.

Crap, really? I was looking to get a good, low-priced laptop, and figured that $659 plus tax for each was pretty good. I might have to cancel, since I ordered one for my sister too! dammit

Yeah, it's for 2. I ordered it through the University thing, and then just took off the 3-year warranty. I figured the warranty was 1/2 the price of the laptop, so it probably wasn't worth it. That, and I didn't really have a $1000 to spend on a laptop....

Anyway, I'm excited to have it shipped today. I've been using a really old desktop to use the internet, and it's ridiculously slow. Hopefully this new one will be nice and fast for the things I do (internet, powerpoint, watching DIVX videos).

imo, the warranty is really important. I used mine 3X on my last laptop... twice for wear and tear and once for accidental coverage (fingerprint in the LCD...friggin s/o)

yea i didnt know it was for TWO laptops, gotta mention that :)

its not a bad deal then.

i always upgrade my warranty, cause i tend to ebay the dell with 6 months to go on warranty, ALWAYS gets sold, and for more money too! Never hurts to have it while owned either.

LCD's look like poop at lower resolutions. not worth paying for if you want to use less of a resolution.

The Belkin thing is a backpack sort of thing, not a sleeve. $200?? This one is going for about $47 on Dell.com.

How are those travel chargers different from the standard ones that come with the laptop? A surge protector I suppose is still a good investment for a laptop when it's plugged in - thanks for that. And I'm fairly opposed to anything wireless, but the bluetooth was added just for future-proofing and accessibility. i.e. a cell phone.
