The battery on the 5 year old Inspiron 1420 at home is about dead.
Looking at Amazon it ranges from $20 to $130 (130 being a real dell battery).
Has anyone had experience with a replacement battery?
6 cell preferred as there is a 9 cell in it now and it is rather big.

it can really be hit and miss for replacement batteries - except for original OEM types
problem is many people sell what they are calling OEM batteries, which in reality turn out to be China knock offs.
I pretty much stick to buying from USA or Canadian based sellers with good feedback on ebay. I have not had any problems so far. -
I have a 1520 instead of a 1420, but it's the same vintage. It can be pretty hit-or-miss. I went with a more-expensive-than-eBay-but-still-a-few-Jacksons-less-than-Dell Rayovac replacement battery (in my case, a 9-cell). More than two years later, no trouble. Sure, it's gradually losing capacity, but not appreciably quicker than the original. Much better than what happened to my friend who bought a cheap battery on the Net - it failed completely about a week in. Though the second or third one he got did work.
So it kinds of depends on how much you're going to rely on it. If you're willing to put up with potentially having to send it back or get another, a cheap no-name brand might be worth the chances. But if you're about to take the laptop on a long voyage (in my case, it was overseas for a number of months), it might be worth spending more for a brand you've heard of.
