My friend is at my house and my cat knocked a bowl from on top of my desk onto the top of his laptop (he had it sitting on the floor closed) and it cracked the screen. It still comes on, but there there are a couple huge cracks and a big black blot at one part where the LCD broke.

His warranty is up which is why he hasn't got a new battery either (it doesn't hold a charge, has to be plugged in, kind of pointless for a laptop lol). So how much do you think Dell would charge? Could we buy a screen and do it ourself for cheaper?

Look on e-bay for someone selling one, buy it, pull the hinge cover off unhook the cables, take out the 4 screws holding the hinge's. Slide it out and stick it on you're friends. or just use the laptop you bought from e-bay.

Dell might do it.. if it's just the case NOT the screen itself, then it'll be cheaper. I'll make a rough guess off the top of my head, just for the case and labor you're looking at 50 - 150 dollars.. lol

If it's the screen to.. you might have to put in a new motherboard in if the screen adapters are different and they don't have any compatible screens.

I don't know really, just bouncing idea's and personal experiences off the wall.. Best thing to do.. call dell.. see what they say..or get a new one..

No, it's the actual LCD is messed up, not just the cover. Like when you bust a cell phones screen and the ink comes out, it partly did that.

    Think this will work

The screen will cost a few hundred at least from Dell, and then more for the 'repairing' cost.

I'd say grab a screen off eBay or Dell and do it yourself.

Will the screen I posted in that link work? How hard is it to change? 30 minute job at the most?

Check the steps here for replacing the LCD.

I suggest that you buy the part from Dell, which comes with a 90-day warranty if you're in the US. and have it replaced yourself or your own tech. for out of warranty systems, you can only have it fixed by sending the system to the repair center. the LCD might cost you around 150-250 USD.

    hope this helps. :)
