Is it possible i really don't want to upgrade from XP to Vista its a bad idea a fresh install is what i want to do but do these "free" upgrades offer this?

I have a feeling one could install Vista from a blank hard disk (buying a 7200rpm, 100gig Seagate next week) and just add your XP key when asked to prove you have it ?

Edit: Another question the "MediaDirect" button (i don't plan to install MediaDirect itself as i don't use it) can this be remapped to launch Media Centrer in Vista as it works mine in XP. (QuickSet sets this i think?)

It depends on what Vista version they're giving you. Depending on which, you can download a full "legal" RC version and enter the product key Dell provides you for the upgrade.
