I called about my Vostro 1700 screen with backlight issues today (Less than a month old) and they have just booked a engineer to visit my house and replaced both the LCD screen and graphics card on Friday!
Surely this is madness, for starters won't they have to disassemble the whole thing to do the repair and how are they going to avoid dust creeping in etc? I paid good money for this laptop, for them to do a shoddy repair would be terrible.
Wouldn't it be quicker for them to replace the entire unit?!

Are you within your 30 days from shipment?
-
Dell will not replace the entire unit unless it doesnt work at all. Its also an outside company that is contracted by dell that will do this work .
-
Then if they just sent a guy with the parts to swap them into your machine?
What do YOU think would take more time?
Also, the laptop is not air sealed... if it was, I think it would melt pretty quickly. So there is already dust in the thing. -
If the tech comes over and does a butcher-job to your laptop, just call Dell and bitc* to high-heaven until they fix it.
-
Just document as much as you can... take pics before.. and do a visual inspection with the tech before he works on it.. and after.. if something happens.. I would call dell immediately.
-
Well the laptop is within the 30 day period but they just ignored my request for a replacement. It will be quicker if they make a mess and end up doing a bad job as I will be straight on the complaints line.
Luckily I'll miss the gruesome bits as I'll be at work, so it won't be me looking after the engineer. But I'll have a little display set up showing just how terrible the screen is compared to my old laptop (Which ironically cost less).
Although saying all this, I can't wait to be actually using my Vostro 1700 as everything else is fantastic! -
2) they wont...you should really think before you speak (or type) because if you did stop and think, you'd quickly realise that there's huge holes in the side of your laptop (vents) that dust can get into...and unless your house is very dusty, then not much dust will get into it when the tech opens it up...as a matter-of-fact, the tech might actually remove more dust than what will "creep in".
3) if that happens just call up, complain, and get a replacement...simple!
4) again...stop and think before you speak/type! also remember that DELL are a business, and making a whole new system for you costs them more money than sending someone out to just fix what's wrong! -
