Was bringing in AMD processors to the Dell lineup a good idea or a bad idea?

More choice is always good. I really wished I had a choice between a very hot P4 and a cool running Athlon 64....
-
in the mobile world, i prefer intel...always have since the pentium m.
in the desktop world, i just switched to preferring intel again.
i'm not a fanboy, but i like what works faster and better. -
i prefer intel
not being a fanboy i just think that amd are behind intel with mobile chips
but i wont comment on amd based desktops because i have zero experience with them,
i do have a amd chip lying around somewhere from when i was building my spare pc last year and bought it from ebay before i bought a mobo/cpu combo lol -
Ive never had an AMD system, but I just like Intel and I always have. But now that Intel definitly has the edge over AMD in both notebook and desktop processors I like them more than ever. The Core Duo is a really good chip, no complaints.
-
its going to be back and forth. i haven't seen both companies release similar products at the same time. when amd released the first 64, everyone scurried over to amd's side. now that intel releases the the core duo series, everyone comes back to intel again. when amd release their new chip, everyone will go over to amd again. its really just a constant cycle.
-
I don't prefer either. I like whatever's best. Right now Intel has the best product in the PC and laptop markets.
-
-
remember when they said p4 is like the best process ever and nothing is ever going to beat it? but look what happened when amd 64 came out. you know never about the market. unless you have a phd in economics, nothing you say is for sure.
-
I am a fan of intel, but the only reason I am a fan of intel's notebook processors is because they ARE the best. I am the fan of what ever is best, unless it's sports XD
-
Intel. They just make the better chips right now. Even when AMD was on top, I still preferred Intel. It was just that I had always had Intel (besides an old AMD K-6 laptop) and had always trusted the name. And now... I'm more of an nVidia fan, and ATi is teamed up with AMD now, so again, Intel seems to be for me.
-
if you're talking about notebooks, i dont think there is any comparison between Intel and AMD. Intel blows AMD out of the water in this aspect.
Desktop processors, it doesnt really matter. -
ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
I am not sure which as they are both very good processors but I don't understand who would vote for the third choice. I've hated Dell, for years, but got this cause it kicks ass.

I have always liked AMD, as the upstart competitor with a great product. I think we need more competition in general than we have now. I don't think I've bought an Intel processor in the last five years, since I've only used desktops, and AMD's chips have been fantastic in that area.
However, the pendulum has certainly swung to the Intel side of things in terms of quality processors lately, and there wasn't even a question that I'd get my laptop with anything but a Core/Core2 Duo in it.
On the other hand...I wouldn't say it was a "bad idea" to include the option of AMD processors. It's just not an option I would choose right now. -
Competition is great, but I've always used Intel.. all the AMD's I've had anything to do with weren't all that great.
-
It's a shame, since I like AMD better as a company, but I'm going to buy whatever has the performance and the price. -
when there is no competition we get crap like the P4 from intel
thanks to AMD's k8 series, this put the pressure on intel for them to make better stuff and now we have the core series.
bad for the consumer to have no options
i like what work best and that is currently intel though i've liked AMD as in reality more people really should've went with an AMD rather then falling for Intel's advertising (their incredibly slow 3.8 ghz+) and getting a p4 -
I have been pretty loyal to AMD but since merom and conroe came I don't think AMD can hold a candle to Intel until they come out with their 65nm chips.
-
Next year is going to be a big year for AMD / Intel competition. "K8L" based processors will come out from AMD, and I really can't see them producing crap when things are on the line. We'll see though.
Intel definately has the better processors now. Might change next year, might not. AMD will be releasing new desktop and mobile processors with the expressed intent of outperforming the competition (obviously). Intel's quad-core processors, from early benchmarks, are showing that they can really perform, and they are coming out in a few months. All-in-all it's exciting, if you're into this kind of stuff.
Better tech rivalry than nVidia / ATI I would say, because it's doing great things for computers.
I'm very happy to see AMD in Dell computers. Better for AMD, better for Dell, better for customers. Intel is pretty much the only party to have a reason to be scornful. -
I am also glad to see AMD in Dells. I do not know about the new AMD mobile processors but they used to be very hot. They were very good though also. I at this point use AMD for my workstations and Intel for mobile. Keep the competition up though please.
-
^^Same here...except for my 1st desktop (A Pentium 200 Mhz), all my subsequent workstations have been built around AMD, and it is perhaps the first time in theast 5 odd years or so, that AMD has fallen behind Intel in the workstation market....Nevertheless, the Dekstop Core 2 Duos are still quite expensive, and nothing beats the VFM of a socket 939 AMD 64 in the wokstation market currently and I still recommend the Venice core AMDs to any friend who is looking to build a VFM machine
Laptops, its a different story altogether....Since the Banias (original Pentium-M) came out, Intel has been the king in the mobile market...and still is...I have bought only one AMD mobile machine so far as I was getting a good deal on it (A Turion MT-30 based Fujitsu)...all other mobile machines I have purchased or recommended to friends are Intels...
Anyway though I wouldn'tcall myself an AMD fanboi, but I do have a soft corner for AMD and am more than glad to see Dell offering AMD chips -
Dell rules either way

I voted for Intel. The majority of my computer purchases are mobile devices, and Intel is hands down the better choice here. Turion X2 doesn't perform as well as Core Duo, and can't even come close to touching Core 2 Duo. Therefore, Intel is the logical choice, at least for this generation of notebook platforms.
