I just got my dell notebook (e1505) yesterday, and when i booted it up, i found that there were two hard drives in my computer (the main C: directory and and empty backup D: drive). I find this extra D: drive annoying because it takes up around 17 gigs of my 80 gig hard drive. I want to delete it, so i read the how to sticky thread on how to delete partitions by southerngirl. but i still have one question. Can i just go into disc manager on the System manager tool and right click the partition i want to delete and select delete without harming my system? will this just add the ~17GB onto my C: drive? also, if this is correct, can i just do it for the other two partitions i don't want?

    Thanks in advance :)

No, that will not just add 17G to your c:\ drive. You'll end up with 17G of unformatted space, which when formatted would most likely be d:\ again ...

There are programs that can merge the drives (like partition magic). Also, I think you can uninstall the Norton trial in Add/Remove programs and it'll do it for you too.

Other option is to do a complete reinstall and delete the partitions. That'll require the XP reinstall disc from Dell. There's a great how-to sticky on the main Dell forum page for that.

Ok, thanks. I'll get partition magic and get right to it! :)

External backup is much better though. Good for cases where you need to wipe out windows. Not so hot if Drive dies all together.

You don't have to get Partition Magic.

Uninstall Norton Ghost, and it will ask you if you want to delete the spare partition or leave it. If you select delete, it will add the extra partition to your XP partition.

Yes, do what she says. (I did mention that as well, so I feel at least a little better about it. :p)
