    If you read this...

It's LAME to the dualcore that the E1505 does not have 10/100/1000 Ethernet and DVI out.

There's NO excuse for the lack of GigE, even as a $20 option.

I'm going to curse Dell hard for the next 48 minutes...

    okthxbye

DVI should be a requirement for laptops now. Just that plain and simple: get rid of the VGA port to make room.

However, I'm confused by the GigE. Most cable and other HSD internet services top out around 6-8 Mbps download speeds. Only the best get close to 15 Mpbs.

    GigE is 1000Mbps...

That is true, but if you are working within a network you might have 1000Mbps speeds.

It would not help internet, but, I still move large files around my network.

Mostly, it's just such a cheap part...

You can always use a DVI -> VGA adapter, but you can't, nor would you want to, go the other way. It's pretty lame.

I have 2 desktop LCDs, both with DVI inputs.

That's because of the power requirements to drive the signal and how the signal is sent over DVI.

It's 2006. I have access to an AC power source?

If I'm on a battery, I'm not driving an external monitor more than likely.

It's just a matter of picking the winning technology and making them even more winner. USB2, Firewire, DVI, wireless, gigE,

None of this is very expensive either, even if it raises the price a few dollars, you are going to happier, more futureproof customers that know Dell is making the right choices, which is their job as manufacturer of computers.

I mostly talking about making the right decision at the manufacturer level.

The Mac Mini, the Mac Book, and the Powerbook all have DVI and gigE and USB2 and Firewire.

Why? Those are all winning technologies, and thus, it's just plain solid to support them.

    WHat does the DVI do?
Should this be a significant factor in selecting a Laptop?
Do the Compals have a DVI too?
Does this mean we get ugly screens when connecting to HDTVS?

DVI is just the new digital plug for external monitors. It is only a factor is you are planning on plugging into an external DVI monitor.

Dell has traditionally reserved GigE for its business/botique laptops. As for DVI, they will only install it if they can fit both VGA and DVI, as you can see from both the 17" machines and the 15" XPS Gen1.

It's got nothing to do with the internet. But for a network where you routinely move files in the 1-8GB range it would be nice.

Dell knows we move files this large around, our laptops have DVD-R and come with 160GB hard drives, they just dropped the ball on even offering GigE even for an optional $10 or whatever it would cost to offer it.

Apple has DVI or mini-DVI on the Mac Mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro.

If you want to use VGA, just use the DVI > VGA adapter.

Like I said, it's 2006, Dell needs to be there supporting the winning technologies, especially when we are talking about $10-$20 components.

    Nice list.

That's what I'm talking about. Being a market leader in more ways than just pure marketshare - building that solid groundswell reputation ("You can't go wrong with Dell" type reputation) that is worth more than advertising. Don't give me a hipster in a golf cart cruising around a factory picking out 2nd rate components. Don't give me some stoner telling me I'm getting a Dell, when I might be busy choosing HP.

Laptops are where it's at for the future. Seize the day!

i wish more notebooks have dvi input...What they need to do is get rid of the S-video input! Wish my dell had a dvi input so I could connect it to my plasma.
