How many of you out there have a dead pixel on your screen?

Dell had mistakenly replaced my screen when I had sent in my XPS Gen 2 laptop to have the top cover replaced. The screen they sent me back with had terrible light leakage and after 2 more failed mail ins to have it replaced, I had them send me one to replace myself. Screen is perfect except for that little...teeny...dead...black pixel. You can't really notice it unless you look, but it drives me crazy to know that it's there.

    The agony! :)

Hmm... Im not sure if it would work on the XPS screen, but I know some people have been able to fix their dead pixels by "massaging" them back to life. All you do is wrap your finger with a soft material, and very gently rub the screen where the dead pixel is.

However im not sure if there is any chance of it working on the XPS. If the LCD is too far away from the outermost layer, you wont even be able to touch the screen lol. But I figure anything thats free is worth a try.

Also it may not be dead. It might just be a black stuck pixel. Im not sure exactly where but there are videos you can watch that flash different colors rapidly, and that will sometimes unstick stuck pixels.

I believe once a pixel is officially dead, it cannot be revived. The screen rub and color flash tests occassionally work with stuck pixels (stuck on a color), but not on dead ones.

This laptop would be perfect if not for that silly pixel. Anyhow, I digress...

No dead pixels can sometimes be revived. If the cause of the dead pixel is because of a short, or bad connection to the panel, Massaging it can correct the problem. Also sometimes a lack of liquid is why the pixel cant fire.

Yes SOME dead pixels are fualty to begin with, and there is no fixing them... but that doesnt apply to ALL dead pixels.

I've heard that you can bring back stuck pixels, but i've never seen anything on bringing back dead pixels.

There are a couple of websites that have videos that are so to randomonly change the colors so that the stucked pixel will come back again.

If it is just one pixel and its not the in the middle of your screen or something that is completely annoying, i would just leave it alone. You could try to get dell to send you a new screen, but judging from the sound of your luck, I'm not so sure that it would work.

I'm almost certain dead pixels can't be revived. It really is a shame because I've totally maxed out the laptop in upgrades (CPU, RAM, HD, video card), it's in good shape, and Dell had to make the mistake of swapping out the screen. The pixel is about an inch from the bottom, again not noticeable unless you're looking for it on a bright background. But since I'm so into details, it will always bug me.

Just venting my thoughts a little...but thanks anyway Fredrick and SG.

Hey SG, does the wind come sweepin' down the plain? Does the wavin' wheat sure smell sweet? What about the wind? Does it come after the rain? :)

I'm in agreeance, i really don't think you can bring back dead pixels.

LOL, if it is that big of a deal, get a new screen. It is better to deal with this issue now, instead of later. Later on, dell could charge you to fix. I can't believe that they changed out the whole display just to fix the front cover. I guess on XPS systems, you might have to do that, but on the 9300, i just unscrewed a billion + 1 screws and switched out the screens + parts.

Kind of hard to tell...we are in a dry spell. No rain for the last 6 months :( I'm so glad that i'm not from Oklahoma...that song would drive me nutz.

Hey SG, I sweet talked them into sending the laptop back to the depot to replace the screen. Now the thing is to see if they actually REPLACE the screen...wish me luck...

If they don't I might have to make a trip to TN and threaten the depot with bodily harm.

LOL Niki, I didn't actually threaten them, I was polite but firm. The problem is their depot service, Solectron. They don't actually always do what Dell CS puts in their tickets. But perhaps I DO need to go there and thrash them...

    Thanks Vidko, will do.

To sum up the story, in the beginning of January, I sent in the laptop to have the top cover plastics fixed. Laptop came back, top cover was all scratched up. Sent out again, fixed cover, but they unnecessarily replaced LCD as well. Screen had terrible light leakage (and I don't complain about that kind of stuff). Sent back again, came back, with only LCD cable replaced. Sent back again, came back with NOTHING done, only included a photocopy page about sparkles and blurriness. I called up, requested an LCD kit, they sent it, screen has the dead pixel. Called back, they suggested I send it out again, and I refused. Tried living with it for a few weeks, called today, and now you know the story...

Whew...who wants to join me for a happy hour drink?

What are you having? You can come tell me in the Off-Topic forum.

I'll hand it to you, I'm probably a nightmere to deal with on the phone.

I would not suggest keeping the screen with the dead pixel for several reasons. First, your screen did not have any dead pixels to start. Second, you will always know that whether you get used to looking at it or not. Finally, if you sell the laptop, you want to be able to say "no dead pixels." People will say it is not a big deal, but notice the questions they ask on eBay--usually the first is about pixels.

So my laptop returns today, with not a single thing replaced. It's accompanied by the photocopy of this:

    http://support.dell.com/support/top...ent?dn=1091681&l=en&langid=1&c=us&cs=19&s=dhs

This is the second time in 2 months they've sent this sheet with no work done, and the 3rd time overall that they did not fix the issue. I don't think I can remember how many times I've sent this thing in...must be at least 7 or 8 times now.

I think it's time to open a can of whoop ass...here's some helpful advice to you current and propective owners..do NOT get their mail-in depot service. Always have the At Home service!

Good news gang. I finally got my laptop back today, and once again I can say it is back in perfect condition. I was fearful of the depot service screwing up again, but they actually pulled through this time. While I prefer the LG type screen, this Samsung they replaced it with has great color as opposed to the one they installed earlier (the one with bad light leakage). Speaking of that, it appears pretty uniform across the screen. And of course no dead pixels.

I'm thinking I should press Dell to upgrade me to At Home service for free, due to all the hassle they put me through. We are talking over 2 months of bad service through the depot. Hmm...

Congrats. I like my Samsung screen on my I9300. I have heard bad things about all the LG's which is kinda odd to me. Enjoy your new lappy...again! :p
