Is the DVI output on a Latitude D Port Replicator or Docking Station "real", or is it some kind of conversion from an analog signal? A Dell tech support person told me it was the latter, but I'm skeptical, since VGA=>DVI is an expensive process.

It seems real.
Both Windows and the Intel graphics control panel refer to my external monitor as "Digital monitor" when it's plugged into DVI through the docking station. They both refer to it as just "Monitor" when it's plugged in through VGA. -
Do you have a graphics card plugged into the docking station? My understanding is that you can just use the docking station like a port replicator, or add your own video card and use that. (The latter, of course, would definitely be true DVI.)

One of the docking stations has a card slot, but I don't have that one.
The docking station I have doesn't have a slot to add a card.
EDIT: I have the "D/Port Advanced Port Replicator".
