Hi, I was wondering what kind of cable I should get to output to a HDTV from an inspiron 1705. Do i need a dvi-i or a dvi-d cable? Thanks.

DVI-I is what the E1705 supports (or to be more specific the video card).

Do most TV's use DVI-I as well? Also, do I want both ends to be male?

All of the TVs that I have used mine with have worked perfectly with the DVI-I interface; and yes, both ends need to be male.

Read the manual that came with your HDTV to make sure DVI-I is compatible with your set.

Also just to let everyone know here. If your TV lacks a DVI input but it has a HDMI input then all you need is one of those adapters to get it to work. The computer will still detect it as an HDTV unit. I did this on my desktop and it worked fine sending a widescreen resolution to my TV. In fact it defaulted to 1080i HD resolution if I remember correctly. But yea. Make sure you get the right cable. Make sure about the port on the laptop and that the TV will support it.
