i would liked to know if the DVD rw that comes with the e1705 is that crappy as some people say. I was thinking on replacing it with a pioneer slim DVD burner with DVD ram from newegg. Are they compatible?

    Load Type Tray
    Interface ATAPI

    or maybe this one:

    Load Type Slot
    Interface IDE

I would like t know if the DVD connection on the dell 1705 is IDE or atapi (whats the difference anyway?) and if these upgrades are possible without compatibility problems.

Mine is fine. It sounds like the fan only louder. Hardly any vibration at all. Mine is the Sony

I have it...I haven't tried to burn any DVDs with it yet, but I can tell you that I find it to be very flimsy. I find myself cradling it when I insert a disk to make sure I don't break it. I don't know if one of those drives is more sturdy but I wouldn't be surprised.

I have certainly put mine through its paces, as far as burning goes, and it has done great (no louder than the next guy's drive at least). The only complaint is that if I don't have the disk pushed down all the way it sometimes pops up while im pushing the try back in, but this is ussualy my fault. As far as how sturdy it is, I can push down on mine (at least with enough presure to pop a disk on it) and it seems fine compared to other ones I have used (honestly they all feel flimsy to me, so I assume thats how it should feel).

For the most part DVD drives in laptops are pretty flimsy DELL uses more than one manufacturer for their DVD drives. As far as I know there are 3 The best being NEC > Sony > Samsung where the Samsung is the worst drive.

Due note that it may be possible to fix issue with the dvd drive by upgrading the ROM.

Personally, I haven't had any problems with my DVD burner, and it's worked perfectly for me. I have the NEC. Others with a Sony or Samsung drive have had a lot of problems, so it really depends on what driver you get.

You can replace the burner in the E1705 with one of those slot loading drives you linked to. Optical drives are very standardized, that Pioneer will work perfectly. However, since the bezels are made specialized for different companies the drive will not be flush with the side of the computer and there will probably be small gaps between the drive and the case.

I mean about compatability problems, like readecing or writong dvd-r or +r or -rw or +rw or Double layer +r /-r or dvd ram etc.... or is just a basic standard?

I have the Sony. Zero problems reading and writing. No compatibility issues. It's about the last thing in my e1705 I would consider changing.

I would have to agree with that. There is no need to fret until you see what you get.
