If it ever does fail to eject, it could be because of the software. It's sometimes programmed to lock the drive so you can't eject. One way to get around this, is just to straighten a paperclip and insert it into the little hole on your optical drive. It should be located near the LED or eject button. Push the paperclip in STRAIGHT, be careful, the drive will automatically eject after the paperclip hits the switch. This is the manual eject found on all CD/DVD drives for PC's. Using the paperclip moves the actual latch that is holding the drive in place, therefore releasing the drive.
If this problem just happens out of the blue (not loading any software), then it's possible your drive is flaking out and should get it replaced.

Jeez I hope my drive is not crapping out - I have only had the computer for a week or so. This problem with cd's not ejecting happens when it should not - one time when I was installing a game and was prompted to "insert disk 2" ... (this normally auto ejects anyway?).
I would send it back for a check, but I am going to brasil tommorrow and I am going to be there for a year at least so I guess I will have to hope things don't get worse...
Thanks for your reply -
This happenned to me. Do you have Windvd installed? Windvd messed up my DVD drive to the point i had to reformat. It had something to do with WinDVD wanting to load the disk first, and if it isnt a DVD the program hangs and is a real bother.
