So I'm on my way to Afghanistan and pop in a DVD. The drive starts making this noise like its rubbing on the disc. When a pull out the disc, there is a scratch around the outside. The disc still worked on another computer, so it wasn't ruined. Since then, I've tried other discs and 2 out of 3 will rub.

Has anyone had this problem? Is there a way to fix it without sending it to Dell? I won't be able to contact them until I get back. This bums me out 'cause I got this laptop to do this very thing on this trip.

    Thanks

Dell makes a lot of laptops. Care to inform us which you have?

Ok, that is a slot loading one. Maybe its possible you have a slightly bent frame on the laptop? Try putting on a flat surface. Does it wobble?

I'm not where I can get to it right now. I bet that's not easy to fix... if at all. I hope it didn't get bent on the trip over, but it's entirely possible.

Well, some people say that they can just bend it back. I don't have one so i wouldn't know. But that is what i have read on these boards.

I just went through this last week with my 1530. These slot drives could very well drive me insane...we'll have to wait and see.

The tech had to come out and install a new one for me, it was rubbing just as yours is and it wouldn't eject properly. I don't think there is any way to fix it yourself unless you wanna tear the entire computer apart and perform surgery on it.
