    Hi,

I tried to burn a DVD for the first time on E1505 laptop.
But the Sonic recorder failed at time of finalizing the DVD.
Then I tried with Nero 6.6.0.13 version, and it showed
success but the DVD never gets recognized by windows.
I tried multiple times with Sonic and with Nero decreasing
the writing speed to 2.4x. But the same problem occurs
every time. My DVD drive is

    Drive : TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L532B
    Type : DVD±R/RW DL Recorder
    Firmware Version : DE03
    Buffer Size : 2 MB
    Date : 07-28-05
    Serial Number : 0002612758
    Vendor Specific : 07/28/05
    Drive Letter : D:\
    Location : 1:0
    Mechanism : Tray
    Read Speed : 24 , 20 , 16 , 6 X
    Write Speed : 24 , 16 , 8 , 4 X

The media I used was Fujifilm 16x DVD+R disk.
It is new and there are no scratches etc.

I also tried to burn a Re-writable CD and it was successful at first attempt using Nero.

Dell diagnostics tests pass. of course they test only read
    access.

I guess this might be some hardware/firmware problem ?
or Nero/Sonic compatibility with this dvd drive ?

    Please help...

if the CDR burned ok, maybe the problem is your DVDR media. before doing anything drastic, you should try burning onto different DVDR media.

Good advice. I don't know what discs you are using now, but Taiyo Yudens and Verbatim are good media.

How's Sonic compared to Nero? Is one better than the other?

Much prefer Nero to Sonic. I like version six over seven which is still pretty buggy. Plus they are trying make it into the whole media suite which I personally do not care for. Best thing is you can get an OEM copy of Nero 6 on ebay for $10 or less.

So far I've burned about a dozen data DVDs on my E1505, no problems. I have the Sony DW-Q58A drive. I've used Verbatim 16X -R's and Ritek 16X +R's.

The drive is slower than expected, taking 13-16 minutes to do a full DVD, but no coasters. I've also had no problems reading the same media burned on my NEC 3520A. In both cases using an OEM Nero 6.6.?.

13-16 minutes is normal for most laptop drives since a very small portion of the disc is burned at 8x.

I'm using Nero, how do I check whether there is any coaster or not on burned DVDs?

I read at many places that TSSTCorp's DVD RW drive is giving problems.

BTW, I now recollect, I didn't set my DVD drive's region. Can this be an issue with burning ?

Avoid TSSTCorp DVD+-RW at all cost. It is a piece of crap.

Mine is making a lot of noise and it's vibrating like crazy.

The first clue is the Nero pop-up "Disk burned sucessfully" That indicated the leadin/out and data are all there. If you don't see the pop-up, for sure you've made a coaster.

The error rate has to be checked with another tool. My usual check, can I read the CD/DVD in another device.

I was able to burn the DVDs most of the time with Nero, but the problem was, although the DVDs were burned successfully, but sometimes during playback it'd freeze or stutter for a few seconds at different parts of the movie, tried the original movie DVD and there was no such problem. Any reason why?

I got my replacement for my TSSTCorp drive today but the box says the NEC drive is refurbished. Should I still keep it?

NEC is a better drive in my opinion whether refurbed or not. I had playback issue with discs burned at 8x on the L532. They were Taiyo Yuden discs to boot which are the best blank discs. Try some different discs. VideoHelp.com is a good resource to find which discs work with your drive.

After lot of tries with different DVD media, I was able to burn a BenQ 8x DVD on my TSSTCorp DVD burner.

I had contacted Dell and as per them may be I need a re-install of the CD burning software.
Will receive their CD for Sonic in 2-3 days.

    Thanks for your suggestions.
