For some reason, I could not set my DVD to Region 1 (US). I still have 5 tries but when trying to set it, I get an error message saying that "Unable to update region settins, please make sure the drive contain region 1 media and you have administration privilege". I have the DVD writer.

The DVD is set to region 1 setting when you get your i9300. Unless you were trying to watch a DVD other then region 1, you'll then be ask to change the region code and it will let you know how many time you have left until the DVD is set for good.

Well, it's not just Dell who does this to their DVD drive. Most other companies does the same thing.

it's not a dell thing. it's how movie distributors divide up the globe into different regions for distribution rights. so, it's not "most" other companies that do it, it's all of them because it's the law.

The reason I said "Most" companies and not "ALL" is because when I was in Taiwan, I bought a DVD drive and it could play any region DVD on my PC.

In which case you bought a hacked drive from Taiwan. They're all required as far as I know to set the drives. However, most of these drives have some way to hack around it.

yes, it's international law. any dvd player anywhere is mandated to be locked to a particular region.

I want to set it because DVD Shrink 3.2 requires region to be set before it can open a DVD. With my desktop it asked the same thing but then I can set the region on it. No luck with 9300.

How many times of uses for it to auto set the region?

    Thanks.

the program slysoft anydvd can emulate any region. it is an excellent program although a bit pricey. it disables all types of copyprotection for dvds and cds. it runs in the background so you wont even notice its there, give the demo a try you might like it.

    You have two options.

    1. Flash the DVD drive firmware and make it region free.
    2. Use software like Slysoft AnyDVD and make the DVD drive indirectly region free.
